When celebrities make announcements or any sort of statement online, they forget that most netizens are deeply passionate archaeologists in their spare time.
If there’s any embarrassing, incriminating, or contradictory statement that you made years ago, netizens will dig it up and shove it in your face.
Xiaxue knows this better than anyone; after she called Worker’s Party MP Raeesah Khan racist, netizens dug up allegedly racist tweets of her own.
Now, it’s Wilber Pan’s turn.
Wilber Pan Just Announced His Marriage & Some People Are Angry That He Went to a Dating Show While Secretly Attached
Wilber Pan, a Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter, just announced he’s getting married.
Unless you’re an ex or sociopath, a wedding announcement is typically something you react positively to.
But the news actually triggered some of Pan’s fans.
On Monday (27 July 2020), Pan announced his marriage to Chinese air stewardess Luna Xuan, his long-rumoured girlfriend.
According to reports, Wilber and his 26-year-old girlfriend had been dating for five years before tying the knot.
The seemingly innocuous detail of the length of their relationship angered some netizens, because it meant that Pan was already attached when he joined the 2017 Chinese celebrity dating show We Are In Love.
The show, which is a remake of the popular South Korean variety show We Got Married, pairs up celebrities to go on dates at romantic locations, because celebrities presumably find it excruciatingly difficult to find a date.
Participants also reveal their thoughts and feelings about their relationship in separate interviews.
When Pan was on the show, he was paired with Chinese host Wu Xin. Their chemistry and his attentiveness towards her was so convincing that viewers shipped them for years.
A Weibo page was even set up by fans for the pair, who was nicknamed the ‘koala couple’, according to AsiaOne.
But then came Pan’s marriage announcement, ruining everything.
Viewer: How dare you choose your romantic partner without consulting us?!

What upset fans the most is that Pan told Wu Xin that he truly meant it when he said, “Let’s date for real”.
According to AsiaOne, netizens took to Pan’s Weibo account to voice their displeasure.
“I feel like a fool who was strung along by others,” said one.
“Using other girls. Playing with their feelings and pretending to be affectionate, dedicated and innocent. My god, it turns out that the entertainment industry is really dirty,” said another.
Netizens are forgetting two things, though:
Advertisements
- that reality TV shows are not as “real” as they purport to be
- Pan’s wife has eyes
Is it inconceivable that Pan hammed up his affection for Wu Xin because it made for good television?
Also, Pan’s wife Luna Xuan likely knows about the dating show and might have even watched it, so it’s not like Pan did something behind her back.
Sometimes, we forget that we don’t own or control the lives of the celebrities we adore. They are, believe it or not, allowed to make their own decisions.
