In a multi-racial, multi-lingual and multi-religious country like Singapore, respect of other beliefs and customs is essential.
Intolerance could threaten the multiculturalism that we have fostered since our independence, and spark tensions among different communities.
Sadly, more and more incidents of racism have emerged in recent months, pointing to a growing boldness to openly exhibit one’s bigotry.
Sometimes, this can be as blatant as saying “I don’t think Indians should date Chinese people”, or, as in this case, it can be as subtle as clanging a gong.
Woman ‘Mimics’ Man’s Prayer Routine by Clanging Gong & Walking Around the Corridor
A video of a woman clanging a gong while her neighbour was performing his bi-weekly Hindu prayer ritual has made the rounds on social media.
The video was uploaded by the man himself, who was surprised by the woman’s rude interruption.
At the beginning of the video, the man rings a prayer bell outside his doorway as he performs his ritual prayers.
A woman then emerges from an adjacent unit, picks up a gong that was placed outside, and starts striking it loudly with a small stick.
Why was the gong placed on the floor outside her door? Well, for this very purpose, we’re guessing.
Instead of getting upset, the man simply smiled and carried out his prayer ritual.
At no point throughout the bizarre interaction did the man confront or ask the woman to stop, but the woman kept on striking the gong like she was part of the National Day Parade.
At the 14-second mark, the man appears to have finished his prayer ritual, but the woman, seemingly offended by his prayer routine, struck the gong several more times before giving the man an expression that said “that’s what you get”.
Lived in the Same Unit For 20 Years & Never Had Any Issues
In his post, the man said his family, like many other Hindus, have been performing this prayer routine twice a week.
“Having lived in this home for more than 20-years we never had any issues”, the man wrote.
“I guess with COVID we have a new norm…” he said at the end of his post.

Netizen Reaction
Netizens commenting on the man’s Facebook post slammed the woman for her actions, with some calling for the authorities to investigate the incident.
As one user rightly pointed out, intolerant residents are getting bolder with their bigotry.
Let’s hope that these are isolated incidents, and that this trend doesn’t catch on.
