If you walk along the streets of Singapore nowadays, you won’t see anyone smiling.

This can mostly be attributed to the fact that everyone’s wearing a mask, but there also hasn’t been much to smile about lately.

Leisure travel, KTV sessions, and large parties are all beyond our reach, while some relatives are too close for comfort.

As a result, everyone has been down in the dumps lately.

But one woman’s odd choice of reading materials on the train has been cheering up residents across the country.

Woman Spotted With Funny Oversized Book Titles in MRT Trains Was Doing a Social Experiment

A woman on the train has gone viral after pictures of her reading oversized books with comical titles were shared online.

The woman, who goes by the handle @womanwithbooks, has seen her following balloon to more than 1,600 in the past month.

Some amusing titles include “How to Transfer Money From My Mind to the Bank” and “How to Survive Your Nosy Relatives This CNY”, which are questions we have all asked ourselves at some point in our life.

Most of her posts were received well, except a few titles like “How to Find a Crazy Rich Husband”, which received some negative comments.

“I got comments like ‘she has to look at her face first before finding a rich one’ from guys and ‘I need that book’ from girls,” she told AsiaOne.

A Social Experiment to Put a Smile On Everyone’s Faces

As for why she read these giant books on the train, the woman simply wanted to spread some good cheer during this dreary, depressing period.

“You know, it’s Covid-19 and we all need some humour to brighten our days,” she told AsiaOne.

In an interview with Vice, the woman explained that the act was part of a social experiment.

“I would say that it’s more of a social experiment than a campaign, it’s also my way of capturing contemporary culture.”

“I am seeking to address millennials’ daily thoughts and feelings that they don’t normally share with others, in a humorous way,” she added.

And netizens certainly identified with some of her humorous book titles, such as “How to Hide Your Insanity”.

“In this modern world, we all have hidden emotions, and I decided to throw the question back to the audience,” she said.

When netizens asked for a copy of How to Transfer Money From My Mind to the Bank, the woman said she would love to have one as well.

“I want to have this magic power too!”

At a time when there’s so much to feel down about, it’s admirable that this woman is trying to cheer us all up.
