Well, the Worker’s Party (WP) has finally responded, though it wasn’t exactly what we were expecting.
Last Friday (3 Dec), former WP MP Raeesah Khan alleged that senior party leaders had told her to stick to the lie she had told in parliament, a lie which landed her in a hearing before the Committee of Privileges (COP).
Exactly four months earlier, Khan had related an anecdote about accompanying a sexual assault victim to a police station, claiming she had come out crying because the officer had made some troubling comments about her dressing and drinking.
She later admitted that this was not true, but claimed that the WP leaders were not only aware of it but asked her to continue with the false narrative.
Given that this is a case of he said, she said, most of our weekend was spent waiting for the party to respond, which it finally did yesterday (5 Dec).
Kind of.
Workers’ Party Won’t Stay Silent at Raeesah Khan’s ‘Serious Allegations’ & Will Respond to Them
In a Facebook post, the party said it was aware of the growing calls for a response to the allegations made by Khan during the hearing.
But there’s a reason it has delayed addressing the allegations.
“We understand that the Committee’s work remains in progress. It is thus prudent for a response to be given at the appropriate forum and juncture,” it said.
It noted that the COP had released an interim report “without having taken the evidence of Workers’ Party leaders, against whom serious allegations have been made.”
The party also emphasised that its secretary-general Pritam Singh is prepared to give evidence before the COP, as he made clear at WP’s press conference last Thursday (2 Dec,) a day before the hearing.
“We thank all who have conveyed messages of encouragement to the Party, including residents of Aljunied GRC, Hougang SMC and Sengkang GRC, Party members, volunteers, as well as members of the public,” it added.
Contradictory Accounts
In its press conference last week, Singh said he had advised Khan to make clarifications in Parliament, adding that Khan had repeated her lie instead.

But Khan claimed that when the party chief visited her home on 3 Oct, a month after she told the lie and one day before another parliamentary sitting, he said there would be no judgement by him if she continued with the lie.
She also claimed that Singh and party chair Sylvia Lim directed her to ignore the police’s invitation to provide more details on the case during their investigations.
While we may not know what exactly happened or who to believe, one thing’s for sure: this saga is not over.
