You Might Have To Take The Bus Instead Of Bukit Panjang LRT During Off-Peak Hours

People who live along the LRT lines would agree with me that the LRT is a fast and convenient transport.

It only takes me 3 stops from Keat Hong, or about 5 minutes to reach Bukit Panjang LRT.

However, with its history of breakdowns being more than the number of times I have broken down crying over my relationships, there is a need to fix it. My past relationships can’t be fixed, but I’m sure there is still hope for Bukit Panjang LRT.

Frequent Bukit Panjang LRT breakdowns and delays

Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) has been getting into the spotlight these few years: The frequent breakdowns, the delays and the choppy terrains makes it a problem that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is determined to resolve.

Hence, BPLRT has been undergoing an extensive multi-year overhaul, to improve on its rail reliability. Most of the works are done during off-service hours.

As such, BPLRT’s operating hours have been shortened to provide engineers with more time.

Minister for transport suggests LRT service be suspended during off-peak hours

However, during an event at SBS Transit’s Sengkang Depot, Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan suggested service on the BPLRT could be suspended during “certain off-peak hours” to reduce stress on it.

He encouraged operator SMRT to explore this option, stating that buses are able to serve the same demand when ridership is very low on the BPLRT. This is to help ease the load on the line without losing service to commuters as well.

What does our LTA say? They told reporters that SMRT is reviewing the operational details of the line. Hence, they are considering this suggestion.

The suggestion might be a solution

Taking into account that off-peak hours have low traffic on the road, this might be a potential solution to help cope with the stress on BPLRT. This would also be a better choice than to completely replace the LRT with buses.

After all, there are many people living along the LRT line that depend on it to get around Bukit Panjang area.

Since this might be a temporary solution till the overhaul completes in 2024, I think that it is tolerable. There might be a little inconvenience, but it might help ease the load on the line.
