Youths Smoked & Drank at Tampines HDB Stairway Every Night; Even Left Their Rubbish Behind

If you’re of a certain age, just the mention of the word “youths” is enough to make you roll your eyes and shake your head while going “tsk tsk”.

For reasons unknown, nowadays, a youth’s only goal in life is to break every rule in the book and oppose authority.

Try telling youths what to do and they’ll do the opposite.

That’s why so many young people have been meeting up with their friends despite knowing that gatherings are banned during the circuit breaker.

Several groups have been caught and punished, but youths are still at it, and it seems like nothing will stop them.

Youths Smoked & Drank at Tampines HDB Stairway Every Night

Residents at Block 363 Tampines Street 34 are at their wit’s end.

Youths have reportedly been gathering at the lift lobby and staircase landing area on the 10th floor every night, while everyone else is trying to sleep.

Speaking to Stomp, one annoyed resident said “They chat and laugh at volumes loud enough to be heard at both ends of the block even at 2am.

“Not only are they noisy, they are also very irresponsible and inconsiderate of other residents by littering the area.

“It’s becoming intolerable.”

What these youths fail to appreciate is that they’re not only risking their health but that of their family members at home.

They may be young and better equipped to combat the virus, but what about their older parents and grandparents?

Also Left Their Rubbish Behind

In addition to flouting circuit breaker rules, the youths also left behind their used cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and plastic bags, creating an unsightly mess.

Report Filed

According to Stomp,  a spokesman for Tampines Town Council said that it has cleared the litter and notified the police and the National Environment Agency (NEA) about the “daily occurrence”.

They have also filed a report through the OneService app.

“We want to take this opportunity to remind the public to adhere to the circuit breaker measures and to practise consideration towards their neighbours,” the spokseman said.

“The public can report cases where safe distancing is not observed via the OneService app and the information provided will help the relevant agencies know where the ‘hotspots’ are that require further enforcement and patrolling action.

“We will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities on this closely.”

Report, But Don’t Shame

You may remember a video of a group of youths fleeing after being caught for gathering and drinking at a block in Tampines last month.

The ones who uploaded the video clearly had the intention to shame these youths online because they were breaking circuit breaker rules.

Those youths were wrong, of course, but why do we feel the impulse to shame them when we can simply report them?

As for the youths, you’ll be able to see your friends in a few weeks once Phase 1 of the safe reopening ends, so please stay away from them in the meantime. There’s a reason why these rules are in place.
