Apple Gets Scared after Lawsuits; Offers Discounted Warranty Batteries

Nevertheless, I will get back to that in a jiffy.

Now, if you’ll remember, Apple had a tiny, little mishap lately.

After the tech company sent out a software update, users of “older” model phones such as the SE, 6, 6S and 7 have reported that their phones have “slowed down”.

Apple eventually acknowledged the fact, stating that “iPhone software has the effect of slowing down some phones with battery problems”.

The aforementioned problem? Ageing lithium batteries apparently delivered power unevenly, said Apple, which could cause iPhones to “shutdown unexpectedly to protect the delicate circuits inside”.

Sounds pretty legit right? Well, it seems that a significant portion of the consumer market didn’t buy that bullshit.

Believing that Apple had intentionally slowed down older phones to incite customers into purchasing newer iPhone models, some have actually filed lawsuits against the company. One particular lawsuit cited Apple as not “requesting consent” to slow down their phones, or “choose whether they preferred to have their iPhones slower than normal”.

Which leads us to the thought-provoking quote I intentionally incorporated at the very start:

“When all else fails, offer discounts. That’s the one thing that never ceases to fail.”

Because our dear Apple here, has decided to do some copyrighting off Albert Einstein.

Public Apology

On the back of numerous lawsuits and a huge chunk of consumer outrage, Apple Inc is now cutting prices for battery replacements and will tweak its software to show users whether their phone battery is good.

In a posting on its website on Thursday (28 Dec), Apple apologised over the way it handled the battery issue, and said it would make a number of tweaks for customers to “to recognise their loyalty and to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple’s intentions.”

According to Channel News Asia, Apple made the move to address concerns about the quality and durability of its products at a time when it is charging US$999 for its newest flagship model, the iPhone X.

Discounted battery replacements

The company said that it would slash the price of an out-of-warranty battery replacement from US$79 (approx. SGD$106) to US$29 (approx. SGD$39)  for an iPhone 6 or later, starting from next month.

The company will also update its iOS operating system to let users see whether “their battery is in poor health and is affecting the phone’s performance.”

“We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down,” Apple said in its posting. “We apologise.”

Well, apology accepted, Apple.

After all, as much as it pains me to say it.

I’m a sucker for discounts.
