Dogs are human’s best friend for a reason. They are loyal, dedicated, and they will protect you till the very end. Giving more than they receive, they just want our love and attention. Isn’t it so simple? They are probably one of the most selfless creatures in the whole world.
Heartbreaking Story
Recently, a Chinese netizen had adopted a Golden Retriever (one that is not allowed in HDB, though) from an animal shelter. According sinchew.com.my, the dog was loved by his new family as it was absolutely adorable and obedient. However, the dog started behaving strangely when night falls. The dog would stay outside his bedroom every night and look at him as he falls asleep.
The owner decided to give it some time to get used to the new environment. However, the dog’s strange habit still didn’t go away. The owner has tried to play with it during daytime to exhaust its energy at night. That didn’t work out well, given that the dog still had enough energy to stay at his door and watch him sleep even after a tiring day.
Worried that the dog might have health issues, the owner brought it to the vet. Results came back, but the dog was in good condition. What could have caused its behaviour then? Desperate to unravel the mystery, the owner went back to the animal shelter where the dog was adopted to seek for an answer.
Traumatised Past
The worker of the animal shelter told the owner about the dog’s past. When the dog was with his previous owner, it was abandoned when it was asleep. It was sneaked out of the house to the animal shelter at night without it knowing.
Ever since then, it was speculated that due to its past, the dog didn’t dare to sleep at night fearing that it would be sent away again.
The current owner immediately broke into tears upon learning the past of the dog.
Upon reaching home, he removed the fence at his bedroom door and shifted the dog’s bed into his bedroom so it can sleep with him at night. By doing this, he hoped to give some sense of security to the dog so that it can sleep soundly at night.
This heart-wrenching story went viral after the owner posted it up on social media. Netizens commented on how the previous owner’s actions can easily traumatise the dog for a long time. Others couldn’t imagine how heartbroken the dog must have felt.
If you are a pet owner yourself, understand that you mean a lot more to your dog than he’ll ever mean to you. To you, he might just be a dog. To him, you’re his world. Love your pets the way you would love a child. All they ever wanted is our care and attention.
