Remember the Standard Charted Robber? I’m sure this has been an old news to many of us. Not until his latest appearance.

Yeap, the latest update shows that he is still in Thailand, and we are all curious to see how it goes.

Customs charges in Thailand

Bank robbery suspect David James Roach, 27, is being investigated by the police in Thailand. Reason? For failing to report to Thai customs that he was carrying more than US$20,000 (S$28,300) when entering the country last July (2016).

It doesn’t take a genius to know where the money came from.

He was found with 700,000 baht (S$28,300) in cash, as well as a notebook detailing his escape plan, which included stopovers in Chiang Mai and Dubai.  It is also reported that Roach, who has hired a lawyer, has been transferred from Bangkok’s immigration detention centre and is currently held in prison. His family has also flown to Bangkok from Canada.

Backstory

Here’s the backstory. Remember seven months ago? He was accused of robbing the Holland Village branch of Standard Chartered Bank of $30,000 on July 7, 2016. Roach allegedly handed the teller a note with his demands, then fled to Bangkok with the money on the same day. Three days later, he was arrested at a backpacker hostel and has been in remand in Bangkok since.

Last July, the Singapore authorities wrote to the Thai government, asking for assistance to repatriate Roach back to Singapore. However, it was rejected a month later as Singapore had no extradition treaty with Thailand. Singapore then issued a warrant for his arrest, and Thai authorities cancelled his right of stay in the country. However, as an immigration offender, Roach would be deported back to Canada if he cannot be extradited.

Whether he will be extradited to Singapore or deported back to Canada depends on the Thai prosecutors since the case has been handed over. Meanwhile, Singapore authorities continue to remain in touch with the Thai government until further notice. I guess we’ll have to wait till then to find out what happens next. But of course, lest you’ve really forgotten, Pokemon GO has come and died, and yet he’s still not charged in Singapore.
