What are the worst kind of scams that you’ve encountered?

Since CNY is approaching, let me just state one that’s pretty well-known.

You know how your mom keeps your Ang Paos for you? Yea that’s a scam, you’re never getting the money back.

But that’s okay, cos’ it’s your mom.

What if it was a total stranger?

Last October, there was a report about a scam at People’s Park Complex in Chinatown.

The salesperson attracted attention by claiming that there are free household items to give away to those who “show face” (i.e. step forward and listen to what they have to say).

But after giving the items out, the salesperson asked for the winners to pay $99.

The “free” element turned out to be a scam.

In November, the same sales team was spotted at a market in Toa Payoh Lorong 4. They used the same method to attract potential customers.

Two months later, the team is back again at the pasar malam at Hougang MRT two weeks ago.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, they tried to lure passerby claiming that there are freebies.

This attracted some aunties and uncles.

The team consists of two Malaysian female salespeople.

They emphasised that there are freebies for everyone, and also claimed that there are eight pots to be ‘given out’ to those who are “sincere”.

After giving a 20-minute speech, they finally delved into the topic: you can buy a $350 pot for just $149.

Those who want to buy were asked to raise their hand up while holding $150.

When the crowd heard that the pots are going at $149, most immediately turned and left. Those remaining scrambled to take the free sponges and scissors before leaving as well.

Nobody was willing to buy the pots.

Thoughts

As the saying goes, “there’s no free lunch in this world”.

You either worked for it, or got scammed.
