During the periods of time with Dengue fever and Zika virus, insect repellent became everyone’s best friend. Whether its insect repellent spray or sticker, parents are willing to buy them for their children.

However, some of us hate the idea of getting insect repellent sprayed on our skin due to the icky, sticky feeling or when mozzie sticker falls off during one of our outdoor activities.

This concern led to the creation of body wash that repels insects by a group of students from Nanyang Polytechnic. This body wash can ward off insects for up to 8 hours, allowing users to skip the step of applying mosquito repellent once they have used the body wash – sounds amazing right?

I mean, I would LOVE the idea of bathing and having a layer of insect repellent on me even at home.

And if you were thinking if it actually works, this group of students have tried the body wash on themselves to test the effectiveness of the product. Before heading out to MacRitchie Reservoir for up to 5 hours, they used the body wash on themselves. Then, they went to the same place on another day without using the wash beforehand.

According to Ms Teo Seok Yee, who is part of the project, claims that they had fewer mosquito bites on the days that they used the repellent body wash. This suggests to them that the body wash is probably effective to a certain extent.

This idea came about when Ms Lam Ching Man, a former NYP student who also took part in this project. Ching Man first thought of creating a mozzie repellent that would protect plants such as chilli or garlic from pests, then moved on to design one for human use too.

The most important thing was to find out what can be used in the wash so that the repellent can stay on human skin without irritating the skin!
