Sad news for Lush FM followers; the radio station’s closing its curtains at the end of the month.
While all of us take a moment of silence for the lost station, here are 10 things you wish you’d known sooner about them.
Why They’re Going Away
Mediacorp’s decision to discontinue Lush 99.5FM from next month stems from a rationale that it gets the least number of listeners compared to its fellow radio stations, and it was not possible to continue with its operating expenses.
What They’ve Played on the Radio
They’ve played a variety of song genres, ranging from electronica, acid jazz and soul music on weekends during their early years, to their more recent stature as “Your Indie Music Station”.
How Many Years Broadcasting?
Lush 99.5FM has been around for almost 13 years now!
They Had A Campaign At One Point
In order to avoid closure at an earlier stage, Lush 99.5FM held a #iListentoLush campaign to bring more listeners to their end.
They’re Still Celebrating with a Bang
This month, Lush 99.5FM is going to celebrate all things local to Singapore on its broadcast – you might want to tune in on that!
Who Are Their Main DJs?
The most famous names are Chris Ho, Elias Soh and Rozz. Chris Ho might be dressed with tattoos (and he looks badass too!) but he once said that if it weren’t for the radio presenter job, he’d probably be working in a temple. Rozz, short for Rosalyn Lee, used to be a professional dancer and a casting director before she joined Lush. Elias Soh loves exploring things- he’s tried mixed martial arts, writing, and is well known for his dry sense of humour!
What’s The Actual Date They Started Broadcasting?
The humble radio station started on the last day of 2004.
The Singapore Sounds Project
Lush 99.5FM is parting with the project, which aims to feature local artists, music and gigs on other music stations like 938LIVE and 987. It can also be found on 8days.sg.
Listeners Switched to Other Modes
An increasing number of listeners of Lush 99.5FM switched to alternative platforms and online means. Mediacorp decided to look at the overall listernership of its group by putting more focus on its remaining 5 English radio stations. The company intends to add the key elements of Lush’s one-of-a-kind entertainment feature to the other stations too.
How to Keep Local Songs Alive?
Lush’s primary focus was bringing local music to the public. While it has suffered a blow, it doesn’t mean that us Singaporeans can’t show our love for our fellow artists. Follow them on social media, participate in local gigs and music festivals, and even ask for local songs on the radio.
I mean, we’ve kinda gotten bored of Despacito, right? Why not listen to some home-grown talent for a change. You can even do something as small as create playlists on YouTube or Spotify and share them on your feed.
No harm done, and it’s probably another step to introducing great music to another person!
