What’s all the hype about BlueSG?
If you haven’t already caught on, BlueSG is Singapore’s first electric car-sharing service that has officially rolled out on Tuesday, 12 December.
Let’s go learn 10 facts about BlueSG right now!
1. Not the world’s largest electric-car sharing programme
First place goes to a similar electric-vehicle sharing scheme in Paris, with more than 4,000 cars. They are backed by the same company – French conglomerate Bollore Group.
2. Only has 80 hatchbacks at the moment
BlueSG is targeting a total of 110 cars by the end of the year. There are also plans to increase the current 32 charging stations (with 120 charging points) to 42 charging stations (with 165 charging points).
Which is well about time they hit their target because we’ve already reached the end of the year, ain’t it?
3. Aiming to be second-largest electric-car sharing programme in the world
Big plans ahead for BlueSG, with a goal of putting 1,000 of such zero-emission cars on the roads (along with 2,000 charging points) by 2020.
4. Backed by Singapore’s government
Reports have stated that Singapore’s government has provided some funding for the program’s infrastructure and is specifically supported by the Land Transport Authority and Economic Development Board.
Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan was also present at BlueSG’s official launch held at the Singapore Flyer.
5. Two subscription plans
One charges a flat monthly subscription fee of $15, and 33 cents for each minute of use while the other has no monthly fee, but charges 50 cents per minute. That’s $4.95 and $7.50 respectively for a 15-minute drive.
The rate per minute is similar to prices in Paris for Bollore’s Autolib car-sharing service.
6. Fought with 12 other proposals to launch in Singapore
According to gov.sg, Bollore’s proposal beat the proposals of 12 other major consortia after more than a year of “careful evaluation” by government agencies such as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Economic Development Board.
7. Drive them only in Singapore
If you’re planning to rent them to go for a trip over to JB, sorry, rejected. You won’t be able to pass through the immigration check points.
To make up for that, they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week though.
8. Must be 21 years or older
To use BlueSG, you must be 21 years or older and hold a valid ASEAN driver’s license or International driver’s permit.
18, 19 and 20-year-olds, this is not for you at the moment.
9. Personalized experience & Safety first
Your personal settings will be uploaded in each Bluecar you rent. It remembers your favorite radio stations and addresses. How awesome is that!
To tackle the safety aspect, there’s even an audible alert to discreetly warn pedestrians that an electric car is approaching.
10. Moving forward: Electric bus-sharing & tram-sharing
This is not the last we’re seeing from Bollore Group. It’s aiming to deploy in the city-state and in Asia other modes of public transport like Bluebus and Bluetram equipped with supercapacitors.
Cleaner air to look forward to in years to come!
