Recently, people have been going crazy over this even when it’s the first time they’ve heard of it after StarHub announced that they would be bringing it in.
It’s so new, some of us even thought that Google creating Wi-Fi for the entire Singapore #facepalm
Here’s 10 facts you need to know about Google Wi-Fi, if you’re intending to get one.
Warning: This article is rather persuasive.
1) Built on new mesh Wi-Fi technology
With Google’s mesh network, each Google Wifi point creates a high-powered connection, and they work together to determine the best path between points for your data.
So now you have a solid Wi-Fi connection at every corner of your house or office. So to those who think that Google is blanketing Singapore with Wi-Fi, here’s the bad news: Google Wi-Fi is to improve your current Wi-Fi connection, not create new one. But then again…
Yay, now I can bring my phone into the toilet while streaming a movie.
2) Network Assist
There’s a feature called Network Assist. What it does is that it manages and optimizes your Wi-Fi network behind the scenes so you just lepak one corner and let it work its magic.
It searches for the clearest channels to connect Wifi points to one another, and to your devices. So you just need to mind your websites or movies while Google Wi-Fi will mind your connection.
3) You might need > 1 Wi-Fi points
So depending on your home size, you might need to have more than 1.
Here’s a breakdown:
So if you live in an HDB, you most likely need just one. Or maybe not even one.
4) Additional Wifi points do not need to be connected to a modem
Only your primary Wifi point needs to be connected to a modem with an Ethernet cable.
Additional Wifi points do not, just simply connect them to a power outlet. Easy peasy!
5) Family Wi-Fi
Well, kids won’t like this one. With this feature, your parents have the ability to pause the internet whenever they want.
I know how you feel. But no choice.
Parents, jump for joy because you can now create labels to pause several devices with a single tap. You’re in full control of screen time.
You can even schedule pauses to automatically pause the internet during certain time of the day, like during meals and bedtime.
6) Guest Wi-Fi
Are you a social bunny? Having endless housewarming parties? You will find this useful.
Your guests can now connect and discover the devices that you choose to make available from your main Wi-Fi network. Cool, isn’t it?
7) Uses the fastest band for your devices
8) Top Notch Security
And I can’t emphasize this enough: Google Wi-Fi does everything for you.
It talks directly to Google, we don’t need a middleman. Sayonara to downloading any sort of zip files for that firewall.
And this is precisely the reason why Google recommends getting it from authorized retailers (i.e. Starhub) as it’s guaranteed to receive the updates.
By now, you should know that an outdated software is a serious security threat.
9) Fuss-free Set up
Are you convinced to make your your purchase now?
A structured, step by step guide is provided to help you with your set up. Pretty idiot-proof.
10) There’s an app for it!
Nowadays, everything must have app mah. Google can’t lose out.
But really, this app is loaded with a ton of impressive features, acting like a control centre for your Google Wi-Fi. Okay, in fact, it’s imperative to use the app to control the device (after all, it’s 2017, eh?).
