10 Facts About The Tuas West Extension Opening in June This Year You Probably Should Know

It’s finally here! Oh god, after decades of workers in Tuas having to wake up extra early to get to work on time, it’s finally here.

Yes, I’m talking about the Tuas West Extension that everyone working in Tuas has been looking forward to for a long, long time.

Here are 10 facts about the Tuas West Extension you probably should know.

1. It’s Opening in June This Year

It makes sense that the most important info should be placed at the very beginning. In case you guys get bored of what I’m going to say (write) and leave before knowing this. #MrTooNiceGuy

The Tuas West Extension (TWE) will begin operations on 18 June 2017, just 7 weeks away.

The TWE consists of four stations – Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link and is said to cut down travel time to the area.

2. The TWE will cut down travel time to the area

According to LTA, the Extension will save up to 35 minutes of travel time for people working in the area.

3. The extension is expected to serve up to 100,000 commuters daily

I don’t know about you but when I saw the figure 100,000 provided, this was what I imagined.

You could think of it in two ways: that it’s going to be crowded as hell; and SMRT has already prepared the stations and trains to handle the volume.

I sure as hell hope it’s the latter because if the extension can’t handle the volume, things could really turn ugly like this:

4. Joo Koon Will Be Replaced As Terminus Station

If you always take the train from Lakeside, you’ll know from experience that there won’t be seats. So some folks will bounce and take the train to Pioneer or Joo Koon for seats.

Now, if you want to bounce for seats, you’ll have to travel up further. Depending on how kiasu your fellow bouncers are, you might have to travel all the way to Tuas Link station. #JustSaying

5. TWE Was Late By a Year, But For A Very Good Reason

To most Singaporeans out there, including you and me, the MRT is always having train faults and causing delays to us commuters. Correct me if I’m wrong but most times, it was announced that train delays are due to signal issues.

TWE was supposed to be start operations in 2016, but it was announced in Q2 2016 that the opening of the stations will be delayed by a year to Q2 2017.

The reason? They are waiting to take advantage of the new ‘signalling system’ which was then being implemented in all NSEWL (North-south-east-west-line).

6. Tuas Link MRT Station Only One To Have Above Ground Train Platforms Below The Concourse

Don’t be surprised if you have to go down to the train platform instead of going up. Unless you are a goon-goon who gets easily confused, I thought I’d add this point in because it’s cool.

Or unique. Pick one.

7. LTA To Enhance Existing Bus Services

I know what you’re thinking. What’s the good of having a train station there if it’s still inaccessible to your workplace? #ICanReadYourMind

This time, it’s a 2-for-1 package, just like the TWE comes together with the Tuas Viaduct. LTA is working on enhancing the existing bus services in the area to improve accessibility to the area from the train stations.

They’ll release more information about that in the coming weeks.

8. Getting to JB Is Going To Be Easier For Westies

Forget taking the Causeway Link buses or 160 from Boon Lay or Jurong East. Forget travelling to Kranji to cross the causeway.

There are plans to build a complementary bus terminal just beside Tuas Link MRT station which will be used to help facilitate cross border travel into Malaysia via Tuas Checkpoint.

Oh, did I mention that this station is damn near the checkpoint? You can literally see it in the distance.

And we’re nearest to Bukit Indah, the only mall in JB that has A&W.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get the same rep as Woodlands, that is, we’re nearer to Malaysia than the rest of Singapore. #WorstNightmareComeTrue

9. Tuas Lighthouse Is Just Beside Tuas Link Station

Raffles Marina is located just beside Tuas Link station. If you’re still not in the know, that’s the place where you can dine with an awesome view of the sea, and more importantly, home to the Tuas Lighthouse that was featured as one of the hidden Instagram-worthy locations in Singapore.

10. Open House At TWE on 16 June

Curious about the TWE line? Then put this date down in your calendar: 16 Jun 2017(Friday).

From 12 pm to 8 pm on that day, you are able to take free train rides along the line for free, and take part in the games and activities available there.

LTA is also planning to hold a series of roving exhibitions to raise awareness about the Tuas West Extension.
