The Singapore hawker culture is truly one of its kind, with so many hidden gems littered all over various hawker centers around the island.

Since the Michelin Guide has been gaining so much buzz recently, we decided to dedicate a little tribute to those stalls that did not get the star, but are still very worth the hype.

Plus, you’ll be sure that they will not have snaking queues, nor will they jack up their prices any time soon.

Here a list of the 10 hawker stalls that once made it up to the newspapers, and are still very much sought after today.

1.Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa

Located at Hong Lim Centre, the Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa is also famed for their Fruit Juice Cray Fish Mee Siam (S$6). Sounds interesting, huh? The laksa is made from all-natural ingredients to produce a sweet and sour gravy that is absolutely appetizing – and even though they were not awarded a Michelin Star, they were given the Michelin Bib Gourmand – better than nothing!

Wait, why is this not in the Michelin Guide ah?

Forget about Tian Tian Chicken Rice (Opps, sorry). The 923 Chicken Rice at Yishun is just legendary. The stall is known for their tender and succulent Hainanese chicken, and also the rows of chicken bones hung up at the store front. The chickens are always deboned before they are served, which makes them easier to be consumed!

If you have frequented the stall, you would have noticed that the stall has been widely appointed as one of the best stalls for Hokkien Mee by many television reality series in Singapore. The Hokkien Mee is generously doused in light and savoury gravy, allowing the noodles to soak up the flavors. Unlike other stalls that serve Sambal Chili together with their Hokkien Mee, the ones here uses cut red chili instead. But really, the focus is all in its gravy.

Since this is the last on the list, I decided to add in one of our writers’ pick which serves really crispy prata. Situated at Jurong West, Enaq Restaurant is known to serve crispy and fluffy prata with ikan bilis belachan chili. And even though you feel your calories bulking up with every bite, you wouldn’t mind as you’ll feel as though you are being sent to heaven – his words.
