In May 2017, a warehouse building opposite IMM caught fire.
A 54-year-old woman suffered burns due to that incident. Believed to be a tenant of the building at 30 Toh Guan Road, she was rushed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Unfortunately, she later died from her injuries.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) conducted an investigation to find the cause of the fire.
And they attributed it to the external claddings used by the building as composite panels.
“SCDF found that the composite panels used as cladding on the building’s external walls were combustible and not certified as Class 0 as required under the Fire Code.”
Due To That, SCDF decided to conduct checks on other buildings
SCDF revealed that they lodged a police report after investigations into the Toh Guan fire concluded.
They also decided to conduct checks on 41 other buildings. These buildings use external claddings supplied by the same supplier who supplied to the industrial building at 30 Toh Guan Road.
Checks were conducted by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and here’s the latest update on 24 August:
“A total of 36 buildings here may have used external cladding that do not meet fire safety requirements here.”
Among the buildings found to have used cladding that is not certified as Class 0 was actually…
Clementi Fire Station
But don’t worry that they’ll be too busy fighting their own fire to come to your rescue. According to the SCDF in a news release, they have since removed the affected cladding.
I’m glad they did, if not they would be fighting against themselves.
Anyway, there are actually 11 buildings which have yet to remove the affected cladding.
And buildings that have yet to be tested:
I hope you’re not a frequent goer of any of the above locations. If not…*choy choy touch wood!*
But fret not, SCDF claims that “all the buildings are safe for occupancy” and they are currently “working with building owners to remove the affected cladding within two months.”
The police are investigating the matter.
Stay safe, friends.
