Two motorcyclists were arrested after duty-unpaid cigarettes and more than 120 vapes and related components were found hidden in their motorcycles at Woodlands Checkpoint.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) disclosed the two separate cases on Thursday, 13 August. The checks took place on 3 and 4 August.
The men, a 46-year-old Malaysian and a 51-year-old Singaporean, have not been convicted.
Contraband Found in Motorcycle Storage Compartments
In the first case on 3 August, ICA officers directed the Malaysian man to undergo an enhanced check while he was riding a Malaysia-registered motorcycle into Singapore.
Officers subsequently found more than 30 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes and over 60 vapes and related components inside the motorcycle’s storage box.
A day later, officers conducted an enhanced check on the Singaporean man, who was riding a Singapore-registered motorcycle.
More than 25 cartons and 30 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were discovered, together with over 60 vapes. The items were concealed beneath the motorcycle’s seat and inside its storage box.
Both Men Arrested
Both motorcyclists were arrested following the discoveries.
The cases were referred to Singapore Customs and the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation.
Electronic cigarettes are prohibited goods in Singapore. Travellers are not allowed to bring them into the country, even if they were purchased legally elsewhere.
