If you have been reading the news, you would have known that there has been a spate of cat killings in the Tampines area and that the suspect has been apprehended.
According to the Straits Times, this latest incident was a string of recent reports of animal abuse in the area. If you are not aware of these cases, here’s what you need to know
The latest report of cat killings was reported to the SPCA on 19 Jun 2016, the SPCA was informed of this incident by a member of the public who came across the body of a white cat that was lying at the bottom of Block 889, Tampines St. 81.
This case was the latest of three cases of cat abuse in the area for the past month.
The earliest recorded case of cat killings in Tampines was on the 25th May 2016, with another cat, that was found dead with a bloodied mouth.
On top of that case, another cat was found in the vicinity injured and limping.
On 1st June 2016, a man was arrested for allegedly abusing a cat at Block 884, Tampines St. 83. The cat involved in this case, unfortunately succumbed to its injuries and died after being slammed twice on the ground and burnt with a lighter.
These cases of cat killings have garnered the attention of SPCA which has issued a statement mentioning that every case of animal abuse is taken seriously and that they hope the public will assist them by providing information on these cases of animal abuse.
SPCA has also commended the actions by various members of the public who have come forward in providing information that has helped them to successfully capture the suspect involved in the cat killing case on 1st June 2016.
The SPCA has also mentioned that the latest case of cat death is still under investigation and based on the information they have, it appears that the cat does not appear to be a stray and instead, a house cat despite no one claiming ownership of it as of 20th June 2016.
They have also reminded cat owners to ensure the safety of their pet cats by installing mesh screens on their windows to prevent any accidental deaths due to cats falling out of windows.
If you are worried by the latest cases of cat deaths, you should know that if you come across any cases of cat abuse, you should provide information to the SPCA .
As a warning to all, the SPCA has mentioned that any individual guilty of animal abuse can be liable to be charged under the Animals and Birds Act.
First-time offenders found guilty of animal cruelty being fined up to S$15,000, jailed up to 18 months, or both. For repeat offenders, the maximum fine is S$30,000 or a jail term of up to three years, or both.
