There are three things we can’t go without in life: burgers, booze and Whatsapp.
And just to clarify, I’m not kidding about the last one.
Whatsapp has become a necessity to us, a life essential, if you must.

And so, this would surely be news the magnitude of a Tsunami to those affected:
From 31 December (this Sunday) onwards, WhatsApp will cease support for a number of operating systems.
So… which phones’ll be off the Whatsapp market?
In case you didn’t click on the image provided, the affected platforms are as follows:
- Nokia Symbian S60 after 30 June, 2017
- BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 after 31 December, 2017
- Windows Phone 8.0 and older after 31 December, 2017
- Nokia S40 after 31 December, 2018
- Android versions 2.3.7 and older after 1 February, 2020
How does it work, exactly?
For those wondering, fret not; you can still use the messenger app on these platforms.
However, the company will no longer “actively develop for these platforms”.
“We will no longer actively develop for these platforms, some features may stop functioning at any time,” WhatsApp said.
What that means, is that new features will no longer be available to those particular systems. Similarly, glitches and bugs within the app will not be rectified with software updates.
Although you gotta wonder, “Why were those particular platforms, to put it bluntly, kicked out as unceremoniously as a race horse on its last legs?”

“These platforms don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future,” the company added.
Well, that sucks. What then, happens to users of those mobile platforms?
“If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 4.0+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8.1+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp.”
It was supposed to be even earlier
WhatsApp had originally told users that “support for these ageing mobile platforms would be dropped by the end of 2016”.
But as the end of the year approached, the Facebook-owned app updated its blog post, informing users the deadline has been delayed till 30 June, 2017.

A further update pushed the deadline again until 31 December 2017.
So yeah, WhatsApp did give us sometime to get used to it.
Nonetheless, you’re well-advised to swap out your phones if you’re one of the affected ones.
After all…
