Being single in Singapore can be difficult, especially with parental pressures to find a partner all while seeing your friends getting hitched and starting families.
You might have even heard the phrase “if I have a dollar for every day I am single, I would be a millionaire”.
Frustrated with being single, one bachelor decided he would tweak that saying in his very own way—walking every day.
Trying to Find a Partner for 21 Years
On 14 March, Muhammad Zailan Mohd Zain declared in a Facebook post that he needed to “walk a lot to relieve my stress”.
The flight operations officer said he has been trying to find a partner for the past 21 years but was unsuccessful.
“I will be turning 38 and I am still single without any female friends at all,” Zailan lamented. “How long should I stay single and my singlehood is very cruel to me.
As a result, he decided to put himself out there literally by walking 34km in just a week.
Walks 3km Daily
Since the post, Zailan covered a distance of almost 50km that week and has been walking at least 3km every day.
He posts frequently about his daily walking journey on the Singapore Hikers Facebook group as well as his Facebook page.
Even when working midnight shifts, Zailan makes an effort to keep up with his daily walks, sharing that he walks 1km before his shift starts and then completes another 3km after he finishes work.
Guess that’s one benefit of being single.

Netizens Leave Encouraging Comments
In the comments section of his Facebook posts, Zailan received numerous encouraging responses from netizens urging him to stay positive.
Some pointed out that while singlehood is frowned upon, it can bring about plenty of benefits.
Like walking and staying healthy.
“Think positive. Singlehood can be fun, enriching too. No one to tie you down, no need to ‘report’ to anyone,” a Facebook user declared.
Another netizen shared a personal anecdote about how she met her husband through walking in meetup groups, and that Zailan would similarly meet a like-minded person.
Loves Hiking
From his Facebook page, it appears that Zailan loves hiking.
He shares videos of his jungle trails in MacRitchie and Pulau Ubin while also regularly documenting his hikes around the eastern part of Singapore.
While Zailan does post the occasional rant about his singlehood, who can blame him? At least he has found a beneficial and healthy activity to keep himself motivated.
