To all O-level kids out there taking the exam: if you’re still deciding between JC and poly, here’s something you really must know.
According to The Straits Times, a total of 4 JCs will be merging with 4 others in 2019, leaving you with 19 schools to choose from, out of the previous 23.
Or rather, leaving you as a choice for 19 schools, instead of 23.
What are the schools?
Why are they named like this?
According to the Ministry of Education (MOE), the name of the older JC will appear first as a reflection of its longer history and heritage.
Why is there a need to merge?
The most important reason would be the falling birth rates.
Between 1993 and 2002, the amount of babies born fell about 20% from about 49,000 to 39,000. Hence, JC intake is now expected to drop from 16,000 in 2010 to 12,800 in 2019.
MOE said that there will be a place for every student who qualifies for JC admission. All JCs will expand to cater to more students.
Why these schools?
For some of the JCs to be merged, annual intakes will drop to 200-300 over the next few years, as compared to the optimal levels of 700-800.
And if you haven’t notice, two non-IP schools were selected from each region – east, north-east, west and north – to form a merger pair.
This is to ensure that the JCs in Singapore are spread out properly lah.

What the netizens say
Here are some of the responses to the new names found on Education Minister Ng Chee Meng‘s Facebook Page.
Some are generally happy.
The merged schools will dedicate special spaces to preserve the heritage of the schools taken off the map.
And this so happens to be one of the suggestions found in the comments section:
Some are voicing out for other merging schools :
Some thought that the solution is a “good idea”:
Thoughts
When the merging was first announced last year, I had a feeling that this would blow up among those that studied at the respective merging schools.
It’s kinda hard to accept the fact that your school is gone just like that.
Also, in the future when you’re telling your kids which school you went, they’ll probably look at you as if you just spoke in an alien language.
On the other hand, the expansion in the various JCs would also translate to better planning and resources, which are good news to potential students.
Anyways, just study hard lah, if you want to be the one choosing the school, and not the other way round.
