While many of you might not be as superstitious as your grandparents, it’s always good to err on the side of caution; after all, one thing we all can’t deny is that we’re all kiasu and kiasi.
In the past, people used to engage Fengshui Masters to provide tips for their new houses, since it’s something that stays with the owners forever. Now? If you just want to be kiasu and kiasi, following these tips would suffice.
Because nowadays, while it’s important than letting the “qi” and “shui” flow in, it’s more important to let WiFi flow in #firstworldproblem
Now, if you don’t know what BTO is, you might want to check out an informative video we’ve done for you newbies out there:

Ok, now you know about BTO, let’s move on to the basic feng shui!
1. No “dead ends”
Choose an apartment in which you can have a wide field of sight without having too many corners or walls (especially in the middle of a room / living space). The “air” needs to flow so that negative energy will not accumulate at the corners of the house and lurk around looking for you at night.
This does not mean that you shouldn’t take an apartment that is at the extreme end of the corridor; in fact, that unit is the best as it is the most exposed to the outside (with windows on 3 sides of the house).
If you live next to an MRT track or have a backyard slope behind your apartment, you need to take better care of your fengshui!
2. The praying ceremony before starting your stay
Before shifting in, it is very important to first get ready a tray (or metal container), a lighter, joss sticks, and a stack of joss paper. The purpose of this praying ceremony is to ward off all loitering spirits in the house (especially at the corners and far ends of the house).
Start from the main door – fold the joss paper into ingot shaped objects then burn them in the metal tray or container. Burn a good whole stack of it. Then move indoors into the house, holding 3 joss sticks in a praying motion, and visit every corner of the house. This ensures that all spaces in your house are “cleansed”.
3. Invite positive energy into your house
Check if you have any bins or trees or clutter outside your house. If so, remove them because they are hindering good luck from entering your house. If you’d like to have some soothing water sound to clear your mind to after a tiring day at work, get a mini fountain or a water feature (the kind that operates on power) to put at the main entrance of your house and have the water direction flowing inwards towards the inside of the house.
Do note not to turn the fountain in the opposite direction and have the water direction flowing out; your good luck will be gone before you know it!
4. Fengshui proof your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom
In your bedroom, it is important to remove items emitting high EMFs (dangerous to health) such as TV, computer or exercise equipment. Open the windows often or use an air purifier to keep your bedroom fresh and full of oxygen.
Have your bed backrest against a wall and not a window, have your bed easily approachable from both sides, have 2 bedside tables (1 on each side), and avoid having your bed directly in line with the door. Have several levels of lighting in the bedroom, so as to adjust the energy according to your needs and mood.
Keep all bedroom doors (closet door, bathroom doors too) closed at night, so as to let the good energy in the bedroom strengthen your health and the health of your relationships at night.
The kitchen should be spacious, clean and bright. Have several levels of proper lighting to ensure that food preparation is done in a good mood and in hygienic conditions (good for your health, too!).
Place some fresh flowers or a bowl of fruits wherever it is suitable in the kitchen, and remove all clutter from the working space in the kitchen. Yellow is a good colour for the kitchen as it aids digestion.
The bathroom, generally a place of relaxation for one after a long day at work, is vitally important for it to have good fengshui. Bathrooms tend to let out energy, thus needing a good deal of thought into the design and location so as to create a bathroom that is healing and calming for the soul.
Mirrors in the bathroom should give the pleasure of you looking at yourself, and should be located to bring out the presence of the fengshui water element (as water is the element that cleanses and purifies).
Keep the space warm and comfortable, for you to relax and have a drink in the bathroom seriously) if you need to. Make it possible to listen to the music in the bath – have a dry corner or shelf where you can leave your speakers or phones at without worrying about them getting wet.
Now, with these tips, you should be good to go designing your own BTO apartment that isn’t just a home, but a home that brings you good luck!
