Sometimes, your worst enemy is yourself.

This could apply to scenarios where you eat too much despite your weight loss goals or when you procrastinate so much on a piece of work that you have to burn the midnight oil just to rush the work out.

Or it could be when you wanted to do something but were just too lazy to carry the plan through.

For one aspiring punter, the chance to strike the lottery was missed due to poor timing. The culprit? The punter herself.

Here’s what happened to this unlucky punter.

TikTok User Felt Lucky After a Dinner

Earlier this week, TikTok user Bentley (@sirbentleyp) posted a video on the popular social media platform sharing a “tragedy” that happened to her.

In the video, Bentley shared the coincidence she experienced one fine day after having dinner and drinks with two of her colleagues.

The trio had visited Black Tap and Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (both located in Marina Bay Sands) on the same night. The bill for both restaurants coincidentally came up to exactly the same number, $167.51.

How rare indeed to have the bills from two separate restaurants rack up the same amount in the same night.

One of Bentley’s colleagues then suggested that they “need to buy [T]oto” to commemorate the occasion. Bentley agreed, suggesting that they “buy the four digits in all combinations”. This was despite their claims that they were not habitual gamblers.

The four digits eyed by the trio in question were, unsurprisingly, 1, 6, 7 and 5, based on the bills.

This suggestion was quickly taken up by the others Bentley was accompanied by that night.

Bentley was so serious about buying the lottery for these four numbers that she did “research” about how to buy the numbers and when these four digits produced a winning combination sitting in the top three spots. It was 1990.

She even quipped if “win liao I throw letter”. For those who need a translation in proper English, she’s saying that she will resign from her job if she strikes the lottery.

Ah, that eternal dream.

The other colleagues also hopped on board the research bandwagon, sharing that the next winning dates were 6 and 7 May.

Bentley then put her plan into action by signing up for an online Singapore Pools account on 5 May. Unfortunately, this is where things stopped going well for her.

TikTok User Missed Out on the First Prize as the Online Account Had Not Been Activated

As the winning numbers were to be revealed shortly after Bentley signed up for her account, there was unfortunately insufficient time for Bentley’s online application to be processed and for her to buy the combinations.

The Singapore Pools website indicates that online accounts are processed within three days.

As fate would have it, Bentley’s account was approved on 6 May and out of curiosity, she checked the winning tickets that very same day.

The number which won the first prize? You guessed it! 6517—a permutation of the numbers 1, 6, 7 and 5.

What a waste that the account was not approved in time. If not, she could have struck the first prize by going through with her plan to buy all combinations of those four digits. We would have been kicking ourselves the whole time for our lack of planning.

A real “Brb, crying” situation, as Bentley aptly described in her caption. For those unaware, “brb” is an abbreviation for the phrase “be right back”.

Should She Have Bought Toto at the Retail Outlet?

While a regrettable loss, it seems that this loss could have been avoided with some simple diligence on Bentley’s part.

Apart from buying online, Singapore Pools also offers offline sales at their retail outlets and other authorised outlets.

As netizens keenly pointed out in the comments section of Bentley’s video, she could have visited the retail outlet in person to purchase the numbers (and then won the lottery).

A missed opportunity indeed.

Other netizens were sharp in pointing out that winning the first prize for Toto is not enough to feed one for the rest of their lives, so it was not that much of a shame that Bentley did not manage to place her bets. After all, the chances of quitting your job right after striking Toto are slim.

Indeed, these netizens’ sceptical views check out. A quick survey of the Singapore Pools site shows that the jackpot for the three most recent draw dates of 4 May, 8 May and 11 May were in the $1,000,000 region.

Perhaps this knowledge will serve as some comfort for Bentley after missing out her first prize.

The amount you win also depends on the amount you bet when buying the digits, so it could also very well have been the case that the winnings were low despite the thrill of winning the first prize. Bentley did not mention in her TikTok post how much she intended to spend when buying all the combinations of the four lucky digits.

Though, we have to say we’re happy with winning $1,000,000, even if it means we continue to work. Some money is better than none.

The moral of the story here is, don’t be lazy when putting your plans into action. If not, you may very well live to regret it (and create a TikTok about the situation).
