6 New COVID-19 Cases Confirmed; 12 In Critical Condition

Six new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed, bringing our national total number of people infected to 166.

Three of the cases are linked to the Safra Jurong cluster, and with 39 cases linked to it so far, the Safra Jurong cluster remains the biggest in Singapore.

Two other cases are linked to a previous case, while the remaining case is not linked to any cluster but has travelled to France from 15 February to 7 March.

Out of the 166 cases, 93 have fully recovered and have been discharged from the hospital, but 12 are currently in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

NTU & NUS Terminate Student Passes Of 2 Foreign Students For Breaching Stay-Home Notice

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) will be terminating the student passes of two foreign students for breaching their 14-day stay-home notice.

The first student is an international postgraduate student from NTU’s National Institute of Education (NIE). He breached the stay-home notice and kept giving false information to the university and the NIE board of discipline regarding his travel history.

The second student is an NUS international exchange student. The student breached the leave of absence requirements and made a false travel declaration to NUS.

25YO NTU Student Hacks Kopitiam Cards & Caused A Loss Of $80,800 To Kopitiam

25-year-old Tee Chin Yue was an NTU student who hacked stored value cards for hostel air-conditioning at his university in 2015. Later, he realised that he could use his computer engineering knowledge to modify Kopitiam cards and get food and cigarettes for free.

His actions caused a total loss of $80,800 to Kopitiam.

He also found out that he could use the hacked cards to top up Singtel prepaid SIM cards, so he charged others on Carousell $8 to top up $10 in their Singtel cards. Doing so allowed him to receive $34,000 from Carousell users.

If he is found guilty for hacking the cards, he can be jailed a maximum of three years and fined $10,000.

AWARE Introducing Two Projects To Help Victims Of Image-Based Sexual Abuse

Gender equality advocacy group AWARE will be introducing two new projects to help victims of image-based sexual abuse. This includes private sexual images that are created, attained, or shared without a victim’s consent.

One of which will be an online platform providing resources for these victims so that the lack of relevant and local information for them will be addressed, while the other will evaluate current measures and practices and give advice on what the victim should do.

Both projects will receive a funding of $3,840 and $4,800 respectively, and the impact of the projects will be evaluated on 25 November.

Prosecution Appeals Against Probation For Undergrad Who Molested Woman

24-year-old Terence Siow Kai Yuan was sentenced to 21 months’ supervised probation last year by a district judge after she said that his academic results show that he has the “potential to excel in life”.’

Prosecutors have appealed against this probation and asked that he be jailed at least three weeks for molesting a woman repeatedly at an MRT station.

Upon hearing the prosecution’s appeal, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said, “It’s not clear to me that the judge completely considered (the dichotomy between Siow’s persona as an academic achiever and his ‘parallel’ life as a pornography addict and sex offender) of the case.”

CJ Menon will consider the sentence and announce his decision at a later date.
