Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby beer would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.

It’s understandable since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.

In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in a bite-sized format:

“Weight-loss” Coffee Sold Online Contains Banned Ingredients; Public Advised Not to Consume Them

If this isn’t clear to anyone yet, here’s the Goody Feed advisory again: don’t anyhowly buy things you consume online.

Case in point: another product that contains banned ingredients.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said that S Gold Coffee, which is sold online, contains sibutramine, a prescription medicine for weight loss that was banned in Singapore in 2010 due to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

They have contacted the online platforms to remove the product, and instructed all sellers and suppliers to stop selling them. People who have bought it should stop consuming the coffee, too.

Number of Dengue Cases Increases to 12,108

Even when 229 dengue clusters were cleared last month, the number of dengue cases is still increasing.

As of 21 September 2019, the total number of dengue cases hits 12,108. However, the weekly cases are falling, from 480 a week last month to 303 a week this month.

It’s time to do the 5-Step Mozzie Wipeout whenever you can, because the peak dengue season will only end after October.

Facebook Now Require More Info for Political Ads in Singapore

Over in some countries, political ads in Facebook (even in TV as well) are marked very clearly, and advertisers have to send in an ID to confirm that they are who they are.

This transparency system will now be implemented in Singapore as well, so advertisers would be held accountable for their ads.

I don’t know whether it’s a coincidence that the General Elections are around the corner, but hey: at least we’ll now know more about who’s trying to convince us to vote for him or her.
