More Than 1,600 kindergarten Pupils To Receive Bursaries

Around 1,600 kindergarten pupils in the country will receive bursaries as part of the North West CDC’s bursary programme for pre-schoolers.

Pupils will receive $100 in supermarket vouchers, and another $100 in bookstore vouchers to cover schooling and household expenses.

The beneficiaries are for those under the Kindergarten Fee Assistance Scheme and childcare subsidy, and come from households with a per capita income of $750 and below.

Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Beer From Hawker Centre

A 49-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing crates of beer from several stalls in a hawker centre, said police on Sunday (Dec 8).

The police said they received numerous reports of stolen beers from a Bedok North Road hawker centre on Nov 30 and last Friday.

They managed to identify the thief using police cameras and arrested him at Bedok North Road on Saturday (Dec 7).

The man will be charged in court on Monday for “theft in dwelling”. The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.

Singapore Softball Team Win Historic Gold Medal At Sea Games

Singapore men’s softball team won a historic gold medal after defeating the Philippines 6-1 in the final at The Villages.

This is the first gold medal won by a Singapore softball team at the SEA Game.

Previously, the best finish for the nation’s softball team was a silver clinched by the women’s team in 2007.

This is Singapore’s 37th gold at the 30th SEA Games.

RWS Says it’s Not Aware Of Dolphin ‘Head-ramming’ Incident Caught on Viral Video

A video clip showing a dolphin repeatedly ramming its head against the wall of a tank went viral after it was taken last year and sent to Empty The Tanks (ETT), a United States-based organisation focused on ending dolphin and whale captivity.

The incident reportedly occurred at Resorts World Sentosa’s (RWS) S.E.A. Aquarium.

In response, a spokesman for RWS said it was not aware of the incident and unable to confirm that the video was taken at its Dolphin Island attraction on Sentosa, where over 20 dolphins are kept.

In the short video clip, the seen swimming towards the side of the tank and slamming its head against the wall nine times.

Straits Times Press Book Wins Children Category of Popular Award

The One And Only Inuka, an homage to Singapore Zoo’s much-loved polar bear which died last year, won the annual Popular Readers’ Choice Awards in the Children’s category on Saturday (Dec 7).

The book was written by former deputy editor of The Straits Times Alan John and illustrated by Mr Quek Hong Shin.

The award aims to recognise local authors, with winners selected based on a public vote from Aug 16 to Oct 27.
