Everything About the $50 Vouchers Some of Us Will Receive; It’s Nothing to Do With the Payout We’re Receiving Next Week

I know what you’re thinking.

Wait, what? Aren’t we supposed to get $300 to $1,000 next week? Why has it shrunk to a $50 voucher? Is it because ele—

Hold your horses. The election is still coming, and you’re still getting the $300 to $1,000 cash payout.

This $50 is a different thingy altogether. A new thingy, in fact.

Community Development Council (CDC) Vouchers Scheme

For a start, this isn’t something that’s specifically mentioned in any of the Budgets. Instead, DPM Heng merely said there was a $20 million grant for CDCs to support families and their needs during the first Budget back in February.

We then forgot about it because $20 million now is…peanuts.

Known as the Community Development Council (CDC) Vouchers Scheme, its goal is to help Singaporean households with daily expenses while supporting local merchants and hawkers.

And not everyone will get it: the households are identified through various government help schemes. A total of 400,000 households will receive it.

If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a notification letter before end-July.

And if you do indeed receive the letter, you can collect the vouchers from the designated community centres, which you can collect any time before 1 December 2020.

The vouchers have to be used before 31 December 2020.

They can only be used in participating shops and stalls such as hawker stalls and mom-and-pop shops, so don’t expect NTUC FairPrice or Sheng Siong vouchers.

So far, 2,500 businesses have signed up, and more would be coming on board as the economy reopens. If it ever reopens.

Here’s how it looks like:

DPM Heng describes this as a “two-in-one”. He said in the Facebook post that they “hope to help families cope with the cost of living, and help our hawkers and merchants during this difficult period.”

I tried looking through the comment section but so far, no one has asked if any bubble tea shops are one of the participating shops.
