Singapore’s core inflation hit a 13-year high of 3.6% in May 2022. This means that everything from ranging from food to non-essentials has in one way or another risen in price.
However, with that being said, people have been asking if the price increase of some products or items is justifiable.
In today’s episode of overly priced items, we have the economic noodle dish from the mixed vegetable rice stall located at KK Hospital’s Kopitiam.
TikTok user @Vikeeganesan recently posted a short clip showing the noodle dish and her unhappiness at its shocking price of $7.50.
Wah, even my large cup of Caramel Milk Tea with brown sugar pearl is cheaper than that.
Breaking Down the Price
In the video, @vikeeganesan shared the breakdown of the price of each dish that she chose.
Here are the prices:
- One Fish Fillet – $2.00
- Three pcs of Nuggets – $2.00
- One Slice of Luncheon Meat – $2.00
- Bee Hoon – $1.50
To be fair, $2 for a piece of fish fillet is acceptable to a certain extent. However, $2 for three pieces of nuggets and $2 for one thinly sliced luncheon meat are quite debatable.
For context, when people buy their economic noodles sets from the coffee shop below their house, it usually cost around $4.50 for 3 items in addition to the noodles.
Those items usually comprises a chicken wing, a slice of luncheon meat and a fish fillet, which is quite similar to those in the video.
To be honest, at the price of $7.50, I could probably eat two meals.
Scrutinising the Ingredients
After she broke down the price, she proceeded to talk about how the ingredient-to-price ratio is absurd.
The luncheon meat in particular was scrutinised by her. She said, “ I can’t believe $2 luncheon meat is super thin.”
She also mentioned, “I think if you are going to charge $2 per item, you should give more.”
Netizens outraged
Upon posting the video on TikTok, the video has garnered over 50,000 views.
Some users also commented about how expensive it was and that the dish was not worth the price.
Others mentioned that a reasonable price for the dish in the video is $5.50, while some mentioned that this kind of prices is the reason they bring their home-cooked food to work.
However, there are a few who are not surprised as they feel that it is apparently the same everywhere else in Singapore.
With inflation predicted to peak in the fourth quarter of the year, let’s be prepared for more food items to be oddly priced, and also the next episode of overly priced items in Singapore.
