Yishun’s not all bad, really. Their Twitter feed, @YishunMan, has been trying his best to convince everyone that Yishun is actually a very happening and nice place to stay in. We have seven more reasons for you to finally make that journey up here, and see for yourselves that even though we may have just a little bit more trouble than the rest of Singapore, life is still pretty great here. Here are seven great places to makan in the best (of course) mall in the north, including one inside GV Yishun!
1. Arnold’s Fried Chicken
Forget KFC. Forget Texas Chicken. Forget Popeye’s. Forget all the other Korean-themed fried chicken restaurants. You know what, I never noticed we have so many different fried chicken restaurants in Singapore. Wow.
Among so much competition, it takes something special to stand out, and Arnold’s has got it in spades. This fried chicken restaurant is situated in GV Yishun, the cinema multiplex right beside Northpoint itself. They offer great portions of deliciously fried chicken at decent prices, and long queues are not uncommon.
Their chicken is something different from the usual fast-food fare, and are well known to be extremely fresh and tender.
2. 4Fingers Crispy Chicken
I take some of what I said previously back. Don’t go forgetting all the Korean-styled fried chicken just yet, because Northpoint has its own 4Fingers, the hugely popular crispy fried chicken sensation. 4Fingers itself is rather well known, of course, but how many of you actually know the heartland in the north, Yishun, has an outlet?
Now you do. And now you have a pretty compelling reason to come visit.
3. Burger Up
This local, halal-certified, pretty hipster-looking burger joint is also in GV Yishun. They were the first ones to adopt the touchscreen ordering kiosks that are in every McDonald’s now, and can proudly claim to have done so before it was cool.
One more thing that they can claim, is being the first to offer fully customizable burgers. Aside from their extensive set menu of pre-designed burgers, you can play chef and design your own. No more agonizing over whether you want chicken or beef, because you can simply get both here in one amazing burger.
4. Senjyu
Craving for something more atas? This premium Japanese restaurant is situated in Northpoint, and you’d never guess it came from the same people who run Sakae Sushi. They offer traditionally inspired Japanese cuisine, focusing more on sushi and sashimi, of course. That does not mean they skimp on the ramen and others, however.
To put it very simply, it’s like a better Sakae Sushi, but saying that takes away much of the other great stuff they offer, like their impressive line of fresh sashimi.
5. Milk & Honey
Known as one of the best local ice cream joints in Singapore, Milk & Honey opened a branch in Northpoint, Yishun. That’s right, this lauded frozen yoghurt place offers great tasting frozen desserts with a unique selection of toppings, from actual honeycomb to macarons.
I’m sure many of you know of this place, but I guarantee a lot of you don’t know about the outlet in Northpoint. I told you, Yishun very happening one.
6. Cantine
This is not merely a different version of Kopitiam. Northpoint already has one downstairs. This one is halal-certified and offers some cuisines you’ll never find in an average Kopitiam, such as Pak Thai Cuisine, a Thai stall offering authentic Thai food.
Don’t let the fact that a bloodied man was found outside this establishment faze you. That incident has nothing to do with Cantine itself, and you can rest assured your gastronomic experience will not be affected by anything of the sort.
7. Stuff’d
Ok, this one I might be cheating a little. As of right now, the Stuff’d outlet is not open yet. But it is going to be open soon!
Stuff’d is a fast-casual Mexican and Turkish food kiosk, which offers dishes like Kebabs, Burritos, and Quesadillas. The food is excellent, and comes in absolutely monstrous portions for some great value. One of their burritos or quesadillas can sufficiently feed at least two people, or possibly even more if you’re one of those people who eat like next to nothing.
Their burritos and kebabs are also served in the Subway style of picking your toppings, so you can get exactly what you like.
Before you claim that there’s nothing going for Yishun, please make your way down and have a look yourself. We have some great places to eat here, which will definitely make you forget all the incidents. Who would have thought GV Yishun would have an entire fried chicken restaurant within it?
