8 Interesting Facts About Changi Airport T4 You Must Know ‘Cos Everyone’s Talking About It

Changi Airport T4 is on everyone’s minds these few days.

Remember when Changi Airport (cleverly) released teaser images of its newly completed T4 on Facebook a couple of days ago?

After it was released, it went viral almost immediately. I mean look at that, wouldn’t you be excited for it too?

Here are 8 facts about Changi Airport T4 you got to know because everyone’s going to be talking about it.

1. When was T4 Built, and When Will It Operate

That’s the burning question on everyone’s minds. Okay, now that you’ve tempted me, when can I go to this chio place?

The maiden aeroplane that T4 receives is reportedly an AirAsia flight flying from KL to Singapore. The same aircraft will take off from the terminal. This is part of ongoing trials before it officially opens later this year.

Other airlines involved in the trials are Cathay Pacific, Cebu Pacific, Korean Air, Spring Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.

It’s mentioned that the terminal is equipped to handle both budget airlines and non-budget airlines.

2. Built on Site of Former Budget Terminal

Remember Changi Airport’s Budget Terminal? It was officially closed in 2012 to make way for T4. The T4 building is a two-storey, 25-metre-high building with a gross floor area of 195,000 square metres.

If that’s not impressive enough, that’s seven times the size of Changi Airport budget terminal.

3. You Can Look Into The Transit Area From The Check-In Hall

The terminal’s showpiece is a 300m long Central Galleria which separates the public and transit zones.

For the first time in Changi Airport’s history, you can view the transit lounge from the check-in all in its full glory.

4. Over 80 Shopping and Dining Options

Always find yourself disappointed when you go to the airport early only to have nothing to do? You won’t have that problem in T4.

The shopping and dining outlets in T4 occupy a space of about 16,000 square metres.

You’d probably want to check in a day before to finish exploring the shops. 😉

5. Almost Everything is Automated

At T4, long queues are the days of the past.

The only place where travellers will meet airport staff is at the security screening areas. Otherwise, travellers can use self-service machines at the check-in, bag drop, immigration clearance and departure- gate boarding.

The terminal uses facial recognition technology to ensure that the same person travels through different processes.

6. Have Its Own Ramp Control Tower

Expect landings and take-offs to be smoother because T4 will have its own ramp control tower to facilitate take-offs and landings.

They will assist the pilots on which runway to use as well as when to push back from the gate before handing the operation over to Changi Air Traffic Control Tower.

7. Expect Travel To and From Terminal To Be A Breeze

The terminal is expected to be able to handle 16 million travellers a year. Remember, Singapore’s population at this moment is 5.5 million.

In order to compensate for the flow of travellers, there are up to 1,500 parking lots in an open-air carpark and a multi-story carpark.

And for travellers who have to board the planes at remote stands (think, climbing up the stairs to the plane from the tarmac), there is a centralised bus lounge with 9 bus bays to facilitate the transportation.

8. You Can Get Both Duty-Free Liquor And Perfume in One Area

Another first in Changi Airport’s history, the two core duty-free products—liquor & tobacco, and perfume & cosmetics—will combine into one large duty-free area in the transit area.

Travellers are permitted to shop for both products at the same time. Yay!
