When 78-year-old Ms Chen returned home from a mahjong session, she didn’t expect to see her 86-year-old roommate Liu Jinlian motionless on the floor.
Fearing the worst, she ran to the nearby fire station for help, and officials confirmed that Ms Liu was dead.
Here’s what happened.
Felt Sick In The Morning, Found Motionless At Night
Ms Chen and Ms Liu lived in a one-bedroom apartment for the elderly in Block 121, Bukit Merah View. Ms Liu was from Perak, Malaysia, and was a Singapore permanent resident. The two of them lived with each other for seven years.
At 9am on 25 September, Ms Chen went out to play mahjong. Ms Liu told her before leaving that she had diarrhea, and wasn’t feeling well.
Concerned, Ms Chen told Ms Liu to see a doctor and asked if she had any money for medical expenses. Ms Liu said that she had access to free medical consultations, so Ms Chen left her alone and went out.
However, when Ms Chen returned home at 11pm, she found that the iron gate of their apartment wasn’t closed. This was the first sign that things weren’t right.
When she turned on the light, she found Ms Liu lying motionless on the ground, with the fan turned on. There was a bowl of instant noodles in the kitchen, and vomit on the ground.

Asked Fire Station for Help
Ms Chen said that while she didn’t dare to touch Ms Liu, she found that Ms Liu had “corpse-like marks on her hands and feet”. Additionally, there was no response when she called Ms Liu to get up.
Fearing the worst, Ms Chen went to the fire station located at the ground level of the HDB flat. They sent the police over to investigate, and confirmed that Ms Liu had passed away.
Ms Liu was believed to have felt uncomfortable after eating some noodles, which led her to vomit on the ground. It is speculated that she died while lying down on the floor to rest.
May she rest in peace.
