Money, the root of all evil. But then again, when the government gives you ‘free’ money, you just take. Yup, no questions asked.
But still, you need to know a little so you can share this knowledge over coffee talk or yum cha.
Here’s the good news:
The Ministry of Finance announced on 2 January that about 880,000 Singaporean HDB households will receive the next instalment of their GST Voucher – Utilities-Save (U-Save) rebate this month.
What’s U-Save rebate?
The U-Save rebate is 1 of the 3 components under the permanent GST Voucher scheme. It helps HDB households offset part of their utilities bills so they can do more CNY shopping online.
That was a joke, the aim is to lower overall household expenses. Really.
It is distributed every three months – January, April, July & October. It is also expected to cost S$265 million over four quarters, starting from July 2017.
Depending on your HDB flat type, you will receive a GST Voucher – U-Save of up to S$95. And as we all know, things are always best presented in the form of a table.
Here you go:
As you can see from the information shown above, those living in 1- and 2-rooms flats will receive the highest tier of rebates at S$95, while those living in executive / multi-generation flats will receive the lowest tier at S$55.
What’s next?
Based on the official GST Voucher site, no sign-up is required for the GST Voucher − U-Save so you can sit back and kiao kah (basically, just relax).
GST Voucher − U-Save payments will be automatically credited to the utilities account of your household and each flat will only receive 1 GST Voucher − U-Save benefit based on your HDB flat type.
In case you’re wondering if you can encash it to buy more bakkwa for CNY, pai seh ah, you can’t because the GST Voucher – U-Save is only meant to directly offset a household’s utilities expense and not other expenses.
And with that said, any unused GST Voucher – U-Save will be rolled over to help offset your household’s utilities bills for the subsequent months.
