9 Different Ways to Eat Durian You Probably Didn’t Think Of

Durian seems to always be in a love hate relationship with all of us. You either love it to pieces or hate it to the core.

Sure, its smell might be too overwhelming for some. But we do not have to always consume straight from the fruit itself. There are many different ways to eat a durian that might get you craving for one.


1. Drink salt water from the durian husk

If your family enjoys durian, you might be familiar with the practice of drinking salt water from the durian husk. It is believed that the salt water has the effect of reducing toxins and heatiness, as well as ridding the after-smell.

We are not so sure about the ability to rid smell, though.


2. Frozen Durian

If you like consuming its flesh but hates the smell of it, you can try freezing it! Frozen durian takes away most of the smell, keeping it at a minimum.


3. Durian Ice Cream

Fancy some Durian ice cream? Here’s how to make one…easily.

  1. Run the durian pulp through a sturdy mesh strainer. Use the back of a large spoon to push it through the strainer.
  2. Stir condensed milk into the strained durian pulp, mix well then set aside.
  3. Whip up the heavy cream to stiff peaks.
  4. Slowly pour the durian pulp mixture in to the whipped cream. Gently whip until everything is well incorporated.
  5. Pour the ice cream mixture into an airtight container.
  6. Freeze overnight.
  7. Enjoy!

4. Durian Paste

Durian paste is one of the most versatile ways to consume a durian. You can literally spread it in your bread like jam, or even use it to make moon cakes.

  1. Put 1 tbsp oil in a non stick saucepan. Add in durian flesh and sugar. Stir and cook till dry [takes about 20 minutes] (yes, you need to cook it!)
  2. Gradually add in oil, 1 tbsp at a time. Stir continuously on low heat until paste is dry and looks shiny.
  3. Dish out to cool completely before storing in refrigerator for later use.

5. Durian Sandwich

Remember the ice cream earlier on? You can use part of it to make a sandwich! You just need a slice of bread, put the ice cream in between, and you can start consuming it.

Or if you want to, use the durian meat as the fillings. That’s hardcore but tastes just as good!


6. Durian Cake

You’ve always got this from cake shops, but why not DIY? It’s not as hard as it seems to be!

  1. Preheat oven to 180C or 350°F.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add in the egg yolks one at a time.
  4. Beat well before adding the next yolk.
  5. Add durian meat and beat well.
  6. Next, add in the beaten egg whites.
  7. Last but not least, add in the flour.
  8. Put in a 8 x 8 greased pan and bake for an 1 hour.

7. Durian Puff

Durian can be made into sweet pastries too! These durian puffs will definitely make you crave for more, given how bite size it is. The process to making it might be tedious, but its relatively cheap to do so! You may find different recipes online to suit your preferences.

8. Durian Smoothie

9. Durian Muffin

Now, let’s leave the best for the last. Muffins are already something to kill for…and if you combine durian with muffins, you get the best of both worlds.

  1. Preheat oven to 190 deg C. Blend durian flesh with 1 tablespoons of caster sugar till smooth. Line small cupcake liners in 2 small muffin pans.
  2. Combine milk and 100g durian puree together with a handwhisk. Add in oil and egg, stir well. Pour in self-raising flour and sugar. Roughly mix the mixture to just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Spoon 1 teaspoon of batter into each pan hole, followed by a teaspoon of durian puree. Then cover the top with batter to almost full.
  4. Place muffin pans in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes or until the top have puffed up.
  5. Remove muffin pans oven and leave to cool. Lastly dust some icing sugar over muffins before serving.
