Finally, there’s a new kid in town in ulu Sembawang.

And it’s none other than Bukit Canberra, the long awaited for brainchild of Sembawang’s residents and Sembawang GRC.

Cues confetti, ang baos, and party poppers that always make us scared af but we must act macho.

If you’ve not heard of this yet, it’s because it’s groudbreaking news. Like literally, it was only officially announced on 1 July 2018.

But fear not, as usual, Goody Feed is here to save the day, giving you 10 quick facts about Bukit Canberra, the hottest thing in town.

(Just so you know, Sembawang is just next to Yishun)

It opens 2020.

As kiasu people, all we really care about is when we can start using them free facilities. To answer the most important concern, Bukit Canberra is set to open from June 2020, and will be fully operational by September 2021.

It’s actually been in the works since 2016, but was only officially confirmed by Sports Hub recently.

All thanks to the legendary vision of the Sembawang residents.

Okay lah, as a wise man once said, “Good things come to those who wait.”

Step Two awaits

There will also be a second phase of reconstruction, following its full opening in Sep 2021. In the second phase, a restoration of the Former Admiralty House, which housed key military commanders in S’pore’s military history, will follow the construction of all the hub’s key facilities.

The old NDU

Okay, well not exactly.

Long story short, the new integrated sport and community hub was once a naval base. In fact, within park grounds, story boards leading visitors through historic structures, such as the Former Admiralty House, will be set up for visitors to learn about and appreciate the area’s history and heritage.

Think primary school heritage trail around Chinatown/Little India, but with a lot of trees and greenery. Gotta be Instagram-worthy for sure.

Second in S’pore

The 12-hectare sport and community hub will be number 2 to roll out after Heartbeat@Bedok, under the Sports Facilities Master Plan (TLDR; a 1.5 billion plan that wants to build several new sports hubs around SG #ActiveSG).

Everything you would want and more

Bukit Canberra will be packed with state-of-the-art facilities.

Amenities include a hawker centre, a polyclinic, a senior care centre, a 500-seater indoor sports hall, the largest ActiveSG in S’pore, 3km of running trails for the fitspos, and even green spaces for community farming and lifestyle related amenities for the community.

Sia lah, I also want, can build one near the west soon?

Opportunities to be the next Joseph Schooling

Most importantly, Bukit Canberra will have 2 swimming pools – a six-lane sheltered swimming pool and an eight-lane lap pool.

Even if you’re not that interested in training hard enough to be the next Olympic champion, a pool is always a pretty nice perk.

Perfect for all those hot summer days in S’pore.

Guess we’ll see you at the pool every day.

Easily accessible

Let’s face it, most of us probably don’t know much about Sembawang other than its proximity to Yishun and its shipyard. It’s not the first place you think of when people ask about convenient places in Singapore, or a place to visit during the weekends.

BUT, with Bukit Canberra, you’ll finally have your chance to explore unfamiliar territory. Located just five minutes from Sembawang MRT and with so many awesome facilities, we think it just might be worth it to check out the new gem in Sembawang.

May the Forest be with Bukit Canberra

For some reason, people like to plant trees during opening ceremonies (maybe as a sign of goodwill?).

Like Trump did, a Sembawang tree was planted to commemorate the joyous event on July 1st, part of 1,600 additional trees that will also be planted around Bukit Canberra to conserve the surrounding greenery as much as possible. #newGardensbytheBay

Not sure why I’d like to include this point, but yeah.

A giant leap for healthcare

As Mr Khaw, our Transport Minister said, “(The doctors’) prescription will include an exercise routine. This time – no excuses.”

The new park and sports facilities are expected to motivate residents to commit to a healthy lifestyle a la the Active Health movement, via its comprehensive services and features that give all visitors a chance to relax and work out together.

To cater to the aging population, rehabilitation and home-based services are also available at the on-site senior care centre. So ah gong ah ma also all can go.

Don’t say bojio.
