Yishun Residents Break Singapore Record with 9.2-Meter Glutinous Rice Dish at Ramadan Bazaar

Residents of Yishun set a new Singapore record over the weekend by working together to grill a 9.2-meter long grilled glutinous rice dish at the local Ramadan bazaar, showcasing community spirit and cultural celebration.

Bazaar Expansion in Its Second Year

The Ramadan Bazaar, organized by the Yishun Central Merchants’ Association, opened on Saturday evening (8 Mar 2025) at an open space next to Yishun MRT station.

Now in its second year, the bazaar features more than 50 stalls offering a variety of food, drinks, and goods for visitors.

Minister for Home Affairs and Law Mr K. Shanmugam, along with four other Nee Soon GRC MPs, Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Louis Ng, Carrie Tan and Derrick Goh, visited the bazaar on Saturday evening and mingled with residents. Mr Shanmugam also serves as the anchor minister for Nee Soon GRC.

The five MPs joined residents in a community activity that culminated in the creation of a record-breaking dish.

Together, they grilled glutinous rice (pulut panggang), creating a 9.2-meter long dish that officially broke the previous record in the Singapore Book of Records.

In a media interview, Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim noted that last year’s Yishun Ramadan Bazaar had only about 15 stalls, but this year it has grown significantly to more than 50, with more expected to join later in the month.

He added that a key feature of the Yishun Ramadan Bazaar is the participation of food business operators from the Yishun area itself, bringing local flavors to the festive occasion.

Strengthening the Kampung Spirit

“Yishun has always been a kampung, and the kampung spirit here has always been strong, thriving in the modern environment,” Dr Faishal remarked during the event.

He expressed satisfaction at seeing residents of different races visiting the Ramadan Bazaar, participating in grilling glutinous rice together, and enjoying the various food offerings available at the stalls.

This multicultural participation highlights Singapore’s social cohesion during cultural celebrations.

In recent years, many new residents have settled in Yishun as Build-To-Order (BTO) flats were completed across the neighborhood.

When asked if new team members would be added to reach out to these residents, Dr Faishal told zaobao.sg that his team is working on two fronts simultaneously – integrating new residents while helping existing residents understand the needs of newcomers.

The team has been actively engaging both new and old residents of Yishun through various community initiatives and will continue to do so to strengthen the kampung spirit in Yishun.

These efforts aim to foster a sense of belonging among all residents, regardless of how long they have lived in the area.

The bazaar will run until 23 Mar 2025.
