Singaporean Lincoln Ng Jing Kai, 29, was sentenced to five years and nine months’ jail on 2 November for manslaughter in Australia.
Pursuit Ended in Fatal Collision
CNA’s court report said Mark John Burnes stole a backpack from the group’s rental car during Ng’s Perth holiday.
The next day, Ng pursued Burnes and deliberately knocked him off his e-bike. Ng then accelerated, thinking the car was in reverse. It was in drive, and he struck Burnes, who later died.
Judge Criticised Taking Law Into His Own Hands
Justice Terence Palmer accepted that Ng feared an attack but said his pursuit had created the confrontation. He should have stopped when the car moved forward.
Ng admitted manslaughter after prosecutors agreed to reduce the murder charge. His guilty plea, remorse and clean record counted in mitigation.
The sentence was backdated to 24 May 2024. He becomes eligible for parole after three years and nine months.
