The good people in Singapore McDonald’s must have clocked in some serious OT hours in the last few months.

Well, for a start, the McGriddles made a comeback early last month, when it announced that it would be out on 7 June 2018 but somehow made a premature appearance, having appeared in stores two days before its launch. Its departure is pretty premature too, as it disappeared from the menu without anyone knowing, leading to one of us even ordering a McMuffin when he wanted a McGriddles #truestory

Fast forward a month later, and the highly anticipated D24 Durian McFlurry landed in Singapore with mixed reactions (though we generally give it a thumbs-up). It’s supposed to be out on 5 July 2018, but in a true McDonald’s style, the durian smell was already in store a day before the planned launch.

Think McDonald’s would have enough of seasonal items this month? Well, you’re wrong.

Today (10 July 2018), McDonald’s new seasonal items are released, and they’re kind of kickass, too.

In conjunction with National Day (that falls on 9 August, lest you’ve not been studying your History) and the Singapore Food Festival 2018, McDonald’s is bringing a few local-food-themed items.

Ha Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Burger

Despite the name, it’s not a burger that’ll make you laugh, but a name-play on “har cheong gai”, which is Cantonese for prawn paste chicken. The Chinese usually call it 虾酱鸡 as well.

Now, unlike Nasi Lemak, you need to be very local to know what 虾酱鸡 is: it’s a kind of fried chicken that’s sweet and salty, commonly found in zi char stalls. Unlike normal fried chicken, they’re usually a lot sweeter and saltier, so they go very well with rice.

Not sure if it’ll go well with buns, though.

The raw prawn paste has a smell that would hulkify anyone, but once deep-fried, its aroma would be as perfect as durian with McFlurry (sounds familiar).

My colleague is already on the way to buy some for a test taste, but if you want an idea of how it’ll be like, just think of this as an east-meet-west food.

Need I say more? It’s 虾酱鸡 with a fancy name (I certainly hope so). You can now either get it from the zi char stall beside McDonald’s or in McDonald’s itself.

Breakfast Curry Burger

Now, this is what I’ll call a creative item.

It’s basically a McChicken patty with Filet-O-Fish buns…together with melted cheese, egg and the iconic McDonald’s curry sauce.

I know we can customize it ourselves, but heck, only the scholars in McDonald’s would have come out with such a combination, call it a new item and still make it so attractive.

This is a breakfast item, so I guess I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow (if I managed to steal my boss’s credit card).

Yeah, this is actually a sequel to Nasi Lemak Burger. Last year, Nasi Lemak Burger was released in conjunction with National Day and the Singapore Food Festival as well, and we all know what happened after that.

Though this time round, I’ve a feeling that it won’t run out of stock.

Because, well, 虾酱鸡 belongs solely to Singapore. Wikipedia says one.

So Malaysians wouldn’t be rushing over just to try it, and then proclaim that Nasi Lemak belongs to them #justsaying
