On 16 May last year, during the Circuit Breaker, 32-year-old Wee Jun Xiang was found dead at Deck 4B of the multi-storey car park at Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road.
He had suffered a heart attack.
Following investigations into Wee’s “unnatural death”, his former girlfriend, Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, was charged in court last Dec with causing the death.
But less than a year later, this charge was reduced.
Funeral Director’s Charge of Culpable Homicide Downgraded to Charge of Helping Ex-BF Commit Suicide
Yesterday (26 Oct), the 39-year-old had her charge of culpable homicide reduced to abetting the commission of suicide.
This means that she helped her former boyfriend take his own life.
Court documents did not describe how the incident took place, nor why Cher did it. What is known, is that Cher allegedly helped Wee commit suicide through nitrogen gas inhalation.
She’s accused of turning the valve of a nitrogen gas tank four to five times, laying it down, and positioning it to pour the gas into a bag.
Cher also faces a charge of obstructing justice, as she allegedly:
- asked another man to drive a van with the nitrogen tank away from the car park and dispose of the bag
- told a police officer that Wee had said he was having chest discomfort for two weeks before he died, even though this was not the case
- told a police officer she believed Wee had died of a heart attack
If found guilty of abetting Wee’s suicide, Cher could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined. And if convicted of obstructing justice, she could be imprisoned for up to seven years, fined, or both.
The Sole Breadwinner
Cher is a single mother of two daughters and the sole breadwinner of the family.
At the time of the offences, she was the director of City Funeral Singapore, which was also involved in the funeral of Aloysius Pang, the Mediacorp actor who died during a military exercise in New Zealand in Jan 2019.
She also ran a recruitment business and had worked at MindChamps as an education coach.
In a blog post four days before Wee’s death, Cher detailed her struggles with the two fathers of her daughters, one of whom was sentenced to jail shortly after she gave birth.
Around the time of the incident, Wee was working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Just two months before his death, Wee, who was a composer also known as Sean, had released a song titled “You Are Gone”.
