On Sunday (16 Oct), a fatal car accident involving a private-hire car and lorry at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 and Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 took the life of the 68-year-old car driver and injured two others.
The police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the accident at around 1:03pm on Sunday.
Car Driver Worked For Grab
It is understood that the 68-year-old driver was working for Grab when the accident occurred.
He was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital via ambulance while unconscious, and he later died from his injuries.
His passenger, a 33-year-old woman, and the lorry driver, a 55-year-old man were taken to the hospital in a conscious state.
According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the private-hire driver was ferrying the passenger along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 towards Buangkok Green.
“He was making a discretionary right turn at the traffic junction of Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 when a lorry travelling in the opposite direction collided into the car,” said the spokesman.
Although there was no elaboration from the local authorities on how the SBS Transit bus in front was involved in the accident, it is known that the car had hit the back of the bus.
Fortunately, no passengers on the bus was injured. The bus captain is assisting the police in the investigation as well.
Reportedly, the driver’s death marks the 40th workplace fatality this year, and the fifth workplace fatality involving delivery riders or private-hire drivers.
Grab has also offered its condolences to the deceased driver’s family, stating that they have extended their support towards the family and the affected passenger.
