There are some things you’ll never see at a hawker centre.
No one has ever seen a drinks stall auntie stay in one spot, for example, as they’re obliged by the laws of the universe to constantly move around and ask customers for orders.
And when dining in is legal, you’ll never see a coffee shop devoid of uncles drinking beer at 10am in the morning and again at night.
Another thing you’ll probably never see, is a baby at a hawker stall.
This is because babies are notoriously bad at taking orders, and also because taking care of a baby while running a stall would be impossible.
Well, except for one woman, it seems.
AMK Hawker Cares for Baby while Serving Food to Customers
A netizen on Instagram has urged more people to frequent a food stall in Ang Mo Kio after he saw the hawker tending to her baby while serving food to customers.
In a picture shared online, the netizen highlighted what looks like a pram at the side of a hawker stall.
The woman, presumably the baby’s mother, can be seen on the other side carrying out her various everyday duties as a stall owner.
The Instagrammer said he was “saddened” when the woman had to rock her baby in its pram while she was taking his food.
He noted how difficult parenting is, especially when your child is kicking up a fuss, and admired that the woman managed to do so in a “hot and stuffy environment” while serving food to customers.
“I can 100% say they are better at parenting than I will ever be,” the man wrote.
Hoped Residents Would Support Stall
In his post, the man said he hopes that residents or those who work near the area patronise the stall to support the owners.
According to the man, the stall serves vegetarian food with a variety of dishes, including vegetarian fried noodles, kway chap, and laksa.
Stall Reportedly Run by Couple
The netizen’s post went viral after it was reposted in the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook group, and soon more details about the stall owners emerged.
According to one commenter, the stall is run by a couple – the husband is in charge of cooking while the wife cares for the baby and helps with ordering and serving customers.
Of course, this is as hard as it sounds, especially so since the stall is apparently run solely by the woman in the evenings.
Another commenter shared that the couple has two kids, one of whom is in school.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard enough on food stall owners, what with all the restrictions on dining out.
With the stresses of running a hawker stall and a baby to take care of, you really have to feel sorry for the couple, who are doing what they have to do to make a living.
If you’d like to head to the stall, here are the details:
