Analysts Project iPhone X Sales to Drop. Another Group of Analysts Disagree

How fun is it to sit here all day reading about Apple’s lawsuits and news?

Not interesting because the money Apple earns is not mine. But still, here are the facts based on analysts’ projection regarding iPhone X’s sales.

iPhone X’s sales will drop

According to Bloomberg, analysts have lowered iPhone X shipment projections for the first quarter of next year since we have come to the end of the holiday shopping season. Most of us are broke, at least I know I am… after all that splurging.

Sinolink Securities Co. analyst Zhang Bin said in a report that handset shipments in the period may be as low as 35 million, or 10 million lesser than what was estimated.

While JL Warren Capital LLC predicted shipments to drop as low as 25 million units in the first quarter of 2018, from 30 million units in the fourth quarter.

This is sad news for Apple because the iPhone X was “highly publicized and promoted” but did not translate to higher global demand.

Let’s also not forget competition from Samsung Electronics Co. and Chinese brands such as Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi.

But all hope is not lost if Apple crams enough new technology into the iPhone X to justify its S$1648 price tag. Maybe more augmented-reality apps?

This is not just my thoughts alright, it’s supported by Jia Mo, an analyst at Canalys in Shanghai who commented, “The market will still hold high expectations for Apple’s 2018 products if Apple introduces more devices with iPhone X’s key features to cover a wider price range.”

iPhone X’s sales are as solid as a rock

And right on the other end of the spectrum, one Wall Street firm defends Apple saying that its iPhone X sales are solid despite recent negative media reports.

Rosenblatt Securities’ analyst Jun Zhang wrote in a note addressing this issue, “We believe iPhone X sales were stable in the North American market through-out the holiday season and has likely seen an acceleration in China’s market over the last two weeks.”

“Our research indicates no further order cuts after the holiday season. Taiwanese media reports and estimate cuts could be confusing the market as we believe they are referring to previously mentioned iPhone 8/8 Plus production cuts with an iPhone X production ramp in December,” he further adds.

I don’t know about their sales but I do know that Apple’s market value has been advancing towards $1 trillion. To be exact, Apple’s stock has soared 51% this year, bringing its market value to almost $900 billion.

Sigh, when will I ever get to see billions in my bank account?

Latest News

Anyhow, the latest news see a dip in Apple shares. But despite that, one expert told CNBC on Tuesday that he’s keeping his focus on iPhone X’s sales in China.

Hans Tung of GGV Capital, a technology investment firm that focuses on the convergence of the U.S. and Chinese economies said, “But looking at China, the early indication for the second largest market for iPhone is that it’s doing surprisingly well in the first weeks of sales.”

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook also said earlier this month that he “couldn’t be happier” with iPhone X’s demand in China. I’m not sure why though… isn’t Apple facing backlash from their Face ID technology which has failed to distinguish between Chinese users?

The incidents have led to racism claims on social media, with some blaming the lack of ethnic diversity in the technology industry and others accusing Apple of only testing Face ID on white people.

Sigh… this debate could go on and on.

Bottom-line is this: Apple needs to come up with more breakthrough features and designs if not, it will become harder even in China, where Android rules over iOS.
