Malaysia’s new Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, recently found himself at the end of online hate.
On Monday (28 Nov), Anwar met with the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. In the pictures uploaded of the event, attention quickly fell to Anwar, but not for the right reasons.

Netizens quickly noticed he was wearing a pair of Louis Vuitton loafers (bottom right) worth S$1,600.
What’s the big deal about that?
Well, it wouldn’t have been a big deal if Anwar had not portrayed himself as a mindful spender.
Previously, in his first press conference after taking office, Anwa declared that he would not be taking the salary of a Prime Minister. It is unclear how much he would take instead, but that’s definitely a touching declaration to hear.
In addition, aligning with his recent efforts to cut back on unnecessary government expenditure, he refused to use a new Mercedes S600 that had been purchased for the office.
Yet, here he is, wearing a pair of expensive branded shoes higher than some of his citizens’ monthly salary.
Capal Sandals vs LV
His LV loafers are starking compared to how he studded into the office wearing capal sandals with traditional clothes on the first day of being the Prime Minister.
Many online netizens were happy to find that he had also casually removed the leather sandals during a meeting with Chief Secretary Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

So comparing that to his LV shoes…that’s a massive upgrade. But it appears that things are not what it seems.
The Prime Minister cleared up the online confusion by tweeting that the shoes were actually a gift given by the Sultan of Johor two years ago.

New Prime Minister
Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as Prime Minister just last Thursday (24 Nov), marking it as a new high for his three-decade political career that began as a protégé of veteran leader Mahathir Mohamad, to a protest leader, a prisoner found guilty of sodomy and opposition leader.
In between, the 75-year-old has repeatedly come close to assuming the leadership over the years. He served as deputy Prime Minister in the 1990s and as the formal Prime Minister-in-waiting in 2018.

Although his appointment has finally put an end to the post-election turmoil that lasted five days, he had assumed leadership at a difficult time.
The economy is slowing, and the tight election has split the country between Anwar’s progressive coalition against Muhiddin’s primarily conservative ethnic-Malay, Muslim alliance.
But whether this would stay is up to anyone’s guess. Watch this to the end and you’d understand:
