The Basic Military Training (BMT) experience. A golden rite of passage that every Singaporean son would have to go through.
Believe it or not, you can now experience it even without shaving your head.
There’s a BMT “Family Edition” for Family Members to Experience BMT; Even Includes Mini POP
Is your entire family fanatic about the whole BMT experience? Because if that’s the case, I have some good news for you:
The “Our NS Family Camp 2023: BMT Family Edition” will occur from 1 to 2 December 2023.
Taking place at the SAFRA Yishun Adventure and Sports Centre, the event will practice what it preaches: give your family the ultimate BMT experience.
For instance, you’ll be able to go through some BMT classics such as Basha Building, Jungle Navigation and Battle Inoculation (obstacle course) with your family.
It should be noted that there’ll be a camo-on routine for the Basha Building event, too. Much to the chagrin of those who’ve ORD’d, I’m sure.
In addition, there’ll be Outdoor Tent Pitching, Outdoor Cooking, Water Attack and even an actual Passing Out Parade (POP), albeit a mini version.
To really drive home the experience, participants will have to address their facilitators as sergeants and fall in whenever requested.
They will also, like the actual thing, sing military songs when walking from point to point.
Of course, there’ll be an incentive to do well, as there’s apparently a chance to get “Best Recruit” at the POP.
So, if anyone fell short in the actual thing, now is the time to get your “revenge”.
Schedule
For garang families who do decide to take on the challenge, you’ll be subjected to two days of utterly vigorous training and hard work.
On 1 December 2023, also called Day One, you’ll first have to “book in” at the SAFRA Adventure Sports Centre at 8:30 in the morning.
Thereafter, there will be an introduction session at 9:00 am, before lunch commences at 11.
Activities then start at 12 and last for six hours.
Dinner kicks off at 6:00 pm before activities resume at 7:00 pm.
At 9:30, you’ll get to wash up and have supper, before lights go off at 11.
On Day Two, the roll call will start at 7:00 am, signalling the day’s commencement.
Breakfast takes place at 7:30 am, and activities will ensue from 8:30 am.
After that, the highly-anticipated Passing Out Parade will take place, and you’ll get to celebrate in earnest and take pictures with the Singapore flag.
Though it states “10:30 pm”, it’s likely to be a typo and is actually 10:30 am.
For the record, a packing list has also been provided.
Modelled after the real thing, the list has a systematic and no-nonsense display of what you should bring to the “training field”.

Not The First Time
This isn’t the first time that such an event has occurred.
Back in 2022, “Our NS Family Camp 2022” took place during the Army Open House at the F1 Pit Building.
Deputy Leader of the House Zaqy Mohamad was present at the event.
