A 24-year-old woman was charged on 13 October 2026 with allegedly biting, choking and repeatedly shaking a five-month-old baby boy.
Lai Yi Phyo, a Myanmar national, faces one amalgamated charge under the Children and Young Persons Act, combining allegations from nine occasions between 2 and 19 April 2026.
A court order prohibits publication of the baby’s identity and the location of the alleged offences.
Allegations Include Biting And Throwing Baby Onto Bed
Lianhe Zaobao reported that the charge includes allegations that Lai shook the boy violently, hit his head and choked him on 2 April.
She allegedly bit his torso and waist on 15 April. Other alleged acts include repeatedly slapping him, throwing him onto a bed and forcefully pushing a pacifier into his mouth.
Guilty Plea Scheduled For November
Lai appeared via video link from police custody. Through an interpreter, she indicated that she intended to plead guilty, Zaobao reported.
Her case is scheduled for a guilty plea on 10 November. The allegations remain unproven, and she has not been convicted.
The usual maximum penalty for this child ill-treatment offence is eight years’ jail, a fine of S$8,000, or both. For this type of amalgamated charge, the Criminal Procedure Code allows up to twice the usual maximum punishment.
