Anger is pretty much the emotional equivalent of fire: they both burn bright and red, and serve their Master well under the right conditions (slight anger brings about motivation and energy surplus). However, like fire, it also has a tendency to burn us if allowed to spiral out of control. Image: Giphy Such was the case for this particular 29-year-old man, who apparently allowed anger to cloud his mind. And it seems that he paid dearly for it. What happened? Having been found guilty of slapping his two-year-old stepson and physically abusing the boy on two more occasions in June 2017, the 29-year-old man was subsequently sentenced to six months and two weeks' jail. Note: The man cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the boy's identity. According to the Straits Times, the first occasion had occurred in early June last year. Infuriated with his two-year-old stepson for crying at night, the man had slapped the toddler, "leaving red marks on the child's face and neck". The boy's mother, 28, then wanted to turn on the lights but the man refused. Using her mobile phone's light function, she shined it on her son to reveal red marks on the latter's face. Her husband later admitted that he had "lost his temper and slapped his stepson's face". A few days later, the toddler reportedly angered his stepfather again when he wet his nappy. The man went on to pull the child's hair and "shoved his head onto the floor". The boy responded by breaking into tears, and her mother was alerted. She discovered several bruises on the child's forehead and noticed that some of her son's hair had been "pulled out" and "thrown onto the floor". The third time occurred while the man was cutting the child's hair. When his stepson refused to stay still, the man pushed the boy and he fell. The boy's mother subsequently noticed redness around the toddler's nose, and on 15 June last year, notified a social worker about the three incidents. The social worker brought the mother-and-son pair to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where staff called the police in. Incredibly, it wasn't the only case In another incident, the man also lost his temper, this time with a polyclinic doctor. Having had a headache, he turned up at Bukit Merah Polyclinic at around 11:00 a.m. on 28 April 2016, but soon got angry when a doctor granted him only a day's medical leave. "I want to punch your face. If I see you outside, I will punch you," he reportedly told a doctor. The man was also involved in an unlawful assembly on 3 May last year, whereby all of the participants were from the same secret society but hailed from different branches. Sentence During sentencing, two additional counts of child abuse involving the same boy and one count of behaving abusively towards a second doctor were contemplated. The man eventually pleaded guilty to one count each of abusing the boy, being a member of an unlawful assembly and utilising threatening words on a polyclinic doctor. He was sentenced to six months and two weeks jail. For each charge of ill-treating a child, offenders can be jailed for up to four years and fined up to $4,000. Incidentally, the maximum penalty for unlawful assembly is a jail term of up to two years, and a fine. Additionally, for threatening a doctor, the man could have been subjected to jail term of up to a year, and fined up to $5,000. On no account... Is physical abuse ever acceptable. And in case you need clarification, anger's NOT a justifiable reason. I sincerely hope that this man will wake up his idea in prison, and not let his emotions control his rationality.
