Most likely, he’ll have to pay for the damages, because to every insurance agency, the logic is simple: your bonnet is damaged means you’re at fault. Now that you know the importance of in-car cameras (a little too late, but better late than never), and before you rush over to Challenger to buy the latest in-car camera, hold your horses: you could actually use one of your old smartphones as an in-car camera. With most of our phones coming with camera (which, sometimes, is even clearer than those in-car cameras), and with many of us having unused old phones lying in our house because they’ll only fetch a ridiculously low price in the second-hand market, you can apparently transform your old phone to an in-car camera. And the best part of this deal? You can even turn it into a stand-alone GPS if you’re going to somewhere unfamiliar. You simply need to buy a car mount that is available practically everywhere—after that, download one of your favourite dash cam apps. Here’s what most of us might not be aware of: there’re many of these apps on the app store for free. For example, Google Play Store has this app, Car DVR & GPS navigator. Not only does it allow you to record footages of reckless drivers, you can even use its GPS navigator (though I would suggest just using Google Maps because it’s the best so far). But of course, if you’re looking to lower your motor insurance premiums by having an in-car camera, this DIY camera might not qualify for the discount.
