Here are 10 makan places that will open your eyes to this seemingly sleepy neighbourhood: Telok Blangah Crescent (Block 11) Market & Food Centre So you’re under the weather, or just not craving for anything in particular? Just get yourself some porridge and you’re good to go. And on other days when you’re feeling better, do check out the fried boneless chicken wings at Fei Lou Porridge. It’s a popular stall there – just be prepared to face a long dinner queue if you decide to go down late for supper. Block 65 Telok Blangah Drive Kopitiam The stall that sells Ban Mian here won’t disappoint you. Same goes to the tze char stall, with food that’s good and cheap you’d rather have dinner here than visit a seafood restaurant. Reader: Wait I'm confused, I googled "what to eat at Vivocity", why are you telling me about Telok Blangah? Because everything at Vivocity is overpriced and not tasty. Reader: I don't care, give me what I want! No! Block 78 Telok Blangah Drive Kopitiam This is the kopitiam I visit most often, because seriously – it’s no ordinary kopitiam. It has a stall selling western food that is so good you’d think you just stepped into a western restaurant. This place houses some of the famous stalls with the best dishes in my opinion. Those worth mentioning (and you should really try) include: the well-known Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia (鸿记面食家) which serves springy wanton noodles, Cheng Fa (成发) which serves delicious prawn noodles, Tiong Bahru Wah Yuen Porridge & Chicken Rice (中峇鲁华园粥品鸡饭), Yuan Cheng Fried Carrot Cake (源成菜头粿), Tian Cheng Fishball Noodle & Laksa (天成鱼圆面·叻沙), Tiong Bahru Shark Lor Mee/Shark Curry Mee (中巴鲁鲨鱼卤面/咖喱面), and Xing Nasi Lemak & Fried Bee Hoon (兴 椰浆饭·炒米粉). Block 36 Telok Blangah Rise Market & Food Centre The best place to pig out after ‘trekking’ Mount Faber, or after an intense workout session at SAFRA Mount Faber because you totally deserve it after all the hard work right? Right. Give the Hainanese Chicken Rice stall a try, you’re going to love it. Just remember to go early. It opens at 6.30 a.m. with a queue and closes at 9 a.m. because it’s that good. Block 46 Telok Blangah Drive Kopitiam A small kopitiam but one with the best fried bee hoon stall in the area. The stall name is ijdij, and I swear by it because I grew up with this stall. A decent portion of fried bee hoon is sold at 70 cents, and you can add-on the classic luncheon meat and egg. Bam! Your breakfast is served at just two dollars. Have a plate of bee hoon together with a bowl of porridge, it’s heavenly. Beside this kopitiam, there’s even an Italian restaurant, Al Borgo, quietly situated at one corner. Man, what else could you expect to see in this neighbourhood? Yeo’s Building Hidden in this commercial building is the phenomenal Sum Kee Food – a Chinese tze char restaurant serving dishes like prawn paste chicken, sambal prawns, and pork ribs. People like to have their lunch and dinner over here with their family or a group of friends. Another hidden gem in here is the New Gillman Seafood Restaurant, where their fried hor fun is something people are willing to wait for.
