Teen Get 9 Months’ Probation for Spitting From Railing of Mall onto Subway Diners Cai Jiaxu has been sentenced to nine months' probation for spitting over the railing of a mall in Bugis towards diners in the basement, reported CNA. The 18-year-old will also have to perform 60 hours of community service and remain indoors from 10pm to 6am during his probation. On 28 Feb, Cai visited the Bugis Junction shopping mall with his two friends. He said he decided to spit over the railing as he was "bored and wanted to see how his friends would react". I'm surprised that the defence didn't lead to his acquittal. Cai told one of his friends to smack his head while it was poised over the railing before he spat, presumably to get a ketchup-out-of-the-bottle effect. The 18-year-old said he had seen a group of people eating at the Subway outlet on the lower floor earlier. So, Cai's friends smacked him on the head and he spat over the railing, while his other friend - 19-year-old Jolin Huang Rui Xian - filmed the entire thing. Here's the result: You've probably noticed a recent trend with young people very stupidly uploading videos of themselves breaking the law on social media. And this is exactly what Huang did. Huang not only shared the video in a group chat with her friends but also posted it on Instagram for the world to see. Image: Tenor They deleted the posts later that night, but it was too late. Once something goes on the internet, it almost always stays there forever. Just ask Bellagraph Nova Group. The clip was re-posted on a public Instagram account and went viral soon after. Could Have Been Jailed For Three Months This might seem like a simple, disgusting prank to some, but Cai could have received a much harsher punishment. After pleaded guilty last week to a charge of public nuisance, Cai was sentenced to nine months' probation, but he could have been jailed for up to three months, fined up to S$2,000 or both. It is not known whether his spittle landed on diners, as the mall received no such complaint, but a representative of the mall lodged a report out of concern for the targeted diners. One Said They Cleaned Up Their Mess & Apologised Back in March, one of the culprits who claimed to be one of the teenagers told Mothership that they went down to clean up their mess after. The spit had also not hit anyone, they said, and they've apologised to the employees at Subway. When Mothership checked with Subway, however, the staff members at the outlet said they were not aware of any apologies. Image: Giphy Several Other Spitting Incidents While there haven't been any recent cases, several others were caught spitting on lift buttons around the same time, soon after the coronavirus emerged. I wish I had an explanation as to why these teenagers do dumb things, but, as former teenagers know, rationality is often lacking in the brains of young punks.
