Beach Road Slasher Requested to Speak to His Wife During Court Hearing But Was Rejected

On Saturday (16 April), the 46-year-old Chinese national, Cheng Guo Yuan, was charged with the attempted murder of his 42-year-old wife, Han Hong Li.

According to The Straits Times, Cheng appeared in court via a video link from Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Cheng remained still and silent, and only nodded in response when he was questioned by the judge.

Psychiatric Assessment Completed for Attacker

Once Cheng is discharged from the hospital, he was remanded and underwent a psychiatric assessment although the findings have not been revealed.

On Friday (20 May), Cheng returned to court for a hearing which he attended via video link as well. When asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Cheng requested through an interpreter to speak to his wife.

Cheng’s request was rejected and the judge pointed out that the court is not a place for personal conversations, and that Cheng’s questions should be related to the hearing.

Background of Beach Road Slashing 

For those unaware, videos of the incident circulated on social media which showed Han begging for her life as Cheng attacked her relentlessly with a chopper outside of a restaurant located along Beach Road.

According to those who knew Han, they said the couple was estranged and had two children together.

Members of the public such as kitchen staff and two air-con technicians stepped in to stop the accused by throwing various objects like ladders, chairs, and metal signposts at him.

During the attack, Cheng was also captured on video to have cut his own wrists and neck.

He was eventually arrested by the police after having a brief stand-off with them where he got tasered.

If convicted of attempted murder and hurt is caused, the offender can either be jailed for life and caned, or be jailed for up to 20 years and get a fine or caned, or both.

Victim Fundraiser Ongoing For Medical Bills 

On 10 May, Han started a fundraiser in hopes to cover the costs of her surgeries and other expenses caused due to the attack.

On the fundraising page, Han said: “I am in great pain every single day since the incident. Thinking about my children keep(s) me alive.”

Currently, her employer and an non-profit organisation are working together with fundraising platform, Ray of Hope, to support Han during this difficult period.

Han has since raised about 96 percent of her target but the target is expected to change as “medical fees are likely to increase” depending on Han’s condition.
